For the birth of something new, there has to be a happening. Newton saw an apple fall; James Watt watched a kettle boil; Roentgen fogged some photographic plates. And these people knew enough to translate ordinary happenings into something new.

POST 728…

Around noon, Bao-Dan and Bao-Tinh arrived safely at the new secret camp of the Thuan-Thien Society. Their arrival at the camp brought joy to all the ‘kiem-si’ and fighters there. Bao Dan handed the Sacred Seal to the Great Chancellor and gave a report on the situation in the capital Thang-Long. After his mission was accomplished, Bao-Dan joined the other fellows in the camp and told the story of his perilous journey. It was a relief for everyone to learn that the region was liberated from the domination of Quy-Su. They were amazed by the faithfulness of Ty-Ho and its decisive intervention in the fight against members of the Dark Army. All felt reassured to know that Ty-Ho was there for them, like an invisible protector.

The situation of the country had worsened by the growing civil war between the Trinh and the Mac. Worried, the Great Chancellor wrote an urgent message for the head of the Thuan-Thien Society of the capital Thang-Long. Around four in the afternoon of the same day, Bao-Dan, as the bearer of the missive, started his journey back towards the capital while riding Sao-Bang and being accompanied by his scout bird Chim-Linh. He avoided crossing villages and there were no incidents until sunset. Approaching into the inescapable area that was controlled by the Dark Army, he was on guard and looking for a suitable and safe place for the night. Suddenly, without understanding what was happening, he fell to the ground and was assaulted by four men who immediately tied him up. Sao-Bang fled before the bandits could catch him. Bao-Dan realized he had fallen into a trap laid by brigands. They took him to their camp nearby and tied him to a tree. He heard a joyful celebration for their catch of a ‘kiem-si’ and his fine sword, which they would trade the next day with the Dark Army for a handsome price. Bao-Dan also overheard the story about a chief of the Dark Army who had been killed by a tiger while fighting against two ‘kiem-si’ the day before. Meanwhile, Sao-Bang galloped back toward the secret camp.

14 – THE TIGER ‘TY-HO’

POST 727

14 – THE TIGER ‘TY-HO’

That evening, back in her hotel room, despite the late hour Clara deciphered the document on the history of Bao-Dan's tiger. When she finished, while still imbued with all the sequence of events she had just read, she transcribed the story in English and stored it in a folder on her computer.

‘Ty-Ho’: Bao Dan’s tiger.

The tiger is a fearsome animal that spreads terror in our region, but it can also be a protector as it is told in the following story:

During the reign of king Mac Mau Hop, in his 24th year of reign, the year of the Rooster (1585), the ‘kiem-si’ Dinh Bao-Dan, a member of the Society for National Protection, Thuan-Thien, found an injured and emaciated tiger cub wandering near the training centre of the Society, in the province of Yen Bai. After several weeks of good care, the young tiger recovered all its strength and was nicknamed Ty-Ho. All of the wounds had healed well but its left ear kept a permanent scar. Ty-Ho became the mascot and protector of the training centre. It was particularly attached to Bao-Dan, his saviour. As soon as it detected Bao-Dan's smell or heard the sound of his voice, it always appeared near its master.

A few years later, while the two ‘kiem-si’, Bao-Tinh and Bao-Dan, the latter carrying the Sacred Seal, were surrounded by members of the Dark Army 'Hac-Binh' of Quy-Su, they managed to disappear into the forest and escape from their pursuers. At nightfall, after several hours of difficult progress in the mountain forest, they came to a rocky platform near a creek where their horses could drink water. Chim-Linh, the scout bird of Bao-Dan, did not signal any danger, so they decided to stop there for the night. The next morning at dawn, just as they were about to leave, Chim-Linh suddenly shouted out shrieks of alarm. Soon after, they could hear the growing sound of approaching horse riders. Swiftly, they mounted their own horses and stood back from the trail, but the four horsemen of the Dark Army 'Hac-Binh', the chief of the group armed with a spear and three others with swords, immediately attacked the two ‘kiem-si’. Bao-Dan and Bao-Tinh fought valiantly and with coordination, but being two against four fighters of athletic stature and well-trained, not before long they were in a position of disadvantage. They had managed to kill one of the attackers, but the situation remained critical. Suddenly, the chief fell to the ground, unseated from his saddle by the lightning attack of a ferocious tiger. Immediately, the tiger clamped his fangs on the throat of the chief, killing him instantly. The tiger was Ty-Ho! Taking advantage of the surprise and the confusion caused by the sudden attack of the tiger, Bao-Dan managed to cut the throat of another attacker while the last one managed to run away. Ty-Ho had saved the lives of Bao-Dan and Bao-Tinh.
