POST 725 …
Master Dinh-Mai speaking to Clara:
“Yesterday, you talked about Dinh Bao-Dan. I have here some documents on the
history of my family.” He got up and walked to the altar of
his ancestors. He opened the desk doors and from a shelf took two old
manuscripts, bound with a thread as it was the way to do in the past. He
moved a pot of orchid flowers that decorated a large table, laid the documents
carefully, then motioned to Clara and Thu-Lan to join him. Thu-Lan: “This orchid is beautiful!” Master Dinh-Mai: “Yes, indeed. I
received it this morning from Nguyen Van-Chung, a former student that I had
not heard of for a long time. This was very kind of him and I am very
touched.” Master Dinh-Mai, showing a document:
“This is my family tree from the 14th century. I have a full transcript of it
in modern Vietnamese.” Then, showing a second document: “This document
contains the detailed history of five famous ancestors: Dinh Bo-Linh, our most distant
ancestor from the 10th century, who is considered the founder of our family.
He unified the country and reigned as Dinh Tien Hoang De. Dinh Van-Liet, a general in the army
of King Le-Loi in the 15th century. Dinh Bao-Dan you already know, from
the 16th century. Dinh Van-Ta, a famous general in the
Trinh’s army in the 17th century. Dinh Tich-Nhuong, another famous
general in the 18th century, at the end of the Le Dynasty. As you can see, the document is thick
enough and I have only a two-page summary in modern Vietnamese. I would like
you to look at it in more detail. You can move quickly through the first
document to get an overview.” Clara and Thu Lan settled side by side
and began to go through the first document. Clara read the document written
in Chu-Nom and Thu-Lan checked the transcript in modern Vietnamese. For the
first seven generations, beginning with Dinh-Tiet, born around 1380, they
found no differences, the transcript was accurate. At Dinh Bao-Dan, eighth
generation, Clara signalled a note and Thu-Lan saw that this note was not
transcribed in the modern version. The rest of the transcript of the family
tree showed no difference with the version in Chu-Nom. The note informed that
to find out more about Dinh Bao-Dan, you had to refer to a document on the
extraordinary story of the tiger. Clara was very interested because she
assumed it was Ty-Ho, the tiger cub that Bao-Dan had saved while attending
training at his Alma Mater. She asked Master Dinh-Mai: “Do you have the
document on the extraordinary story of the tiger, which is mentioned here
beside the name of Dinh Bao-Dan?” Master Dinh-Mai: “Come with me, we will search among the other documents by my ancestors that have kept.”
