And immediately Clara executed a series of movements with grace, precision and energy. The man looked surprised as he recognized that these were the movements he had just performed.

When she finished, he asked: "Who taught you this?”

Clara, looking at him with a little mischievous air: "A master taught me this."

The man, still under the effect of surprise: "What is the name of your master?"

Clara: "I don't know because I don't know him yet."

The man realized that she had just learned the moves from him, simply by watching him. It was the first time he met someone able to learn a form so quickly. Interested, he gave her a scrutinizing eye. This young woman had a high level of practice and was endowed with an observation and an exceptional memory. Although impressed, he did not let it show.

The man asked: "Do you know the name of this series of movements?"

Clara: "No, but I would like to know it. Can you tell me?"

The man looked at her in the eyes and replied: "No, not now. If you really want to know it, come back here tomorrow."

With that, he bowed giving a little nod and left.

The next morning, Clara returned to the beach. The man was already there, doing his training. When he finished, Clara greeted him.

"You made me wait. It's too late now. Come back tomorrow." After uttering these words, the man slipped away very quickly.

Clara was surprised and walked along the beach, thinking. The next day, when the man came to the beach one minute after midnight, Clara was already there, waiting for him. That night, Clara Ikube was accepted as a disciple by Master Steve Hogan, who taught her the form called Bat Nha, the same name as the sutra he declaimed while performing the movements.

In the years that followed that first meeting, as a disciple Clara was allowed to participate in several international martial art trainings directed by her master. During these sessions, taking place in different countries like France, Italy, Portugal, Poland, and Canada, Clara discovered that master Hogan, a university professor of Research Methodology, was very knowledgeable in many fields of studies. After an intensive training session in the Italian Alps, the master had explained the importance of Seals in the world of martial arts and in Vietnam traditional culture. He talked about the ancient national Sacred Seal, of which today no-one knows the location.

He would certainly be able to help her in decoding the mysterious document that Nick P. Walker had given to her.

A dying culture invariably exhibits personal rudeness. Bad manners.

Lack of consideration for others in minor matters.

A loss of politeness, of gentle manners, is more significant than is a riot.”

THE MASTER OF MARTIAL ARTS

POST 696

Clara was attracted both by the beauty and harmony of his evolutions and by his reverberating deep voice, reciting words that accompanied the movements. The whole set of movements radiated an energy that seemed to envelop the man of an impenetrable sphere, and the voice sounded as if it was coming from all directions. The vibrations of the declaimed words emitted an energy she could actually feel. The man repeated his training four times, every time changing direction. Clara had recognized a master of martial arts in the man, of Asian origins and of indeterminable age.

When he finished, she approached him, and after bowing respectfully in the Japanese way, she addressed him: "What you have just performed is really beautiful!"

The man, who was about to leave, replied: "Thank you!"

Clara: "I very often come to this beach for my training and this is the first time I see you. “The man: "Ah! I never saw you training here."

Clara: "I had just arrived when I noticed you."

The man: "What do you practice?"

Clara explained: "I don't belong to a school. I practice different forms of martial arts."

The man, wryly: "That's interesting. Can you show me something?"

Clara: "Yes, with pleasure!"

The determination of the value of an item must not be based on its price, but rather on the utility it yields. The price of the item is dependent only on the thing itself and is equal for everyone; the utility, however, is dependent on the particular circumstances of the person making the estimate. Thus there is no doubt that a gain of one thousand ducats is more significant to a pauper than to a rich man though both gain the same amount.

Daniel Bernoulli

POST 695

2 - THE MASTER OF MARTIAL ARTS

At Los Angeles airport, Clara Ikube was patiently waiting for the return from Paris of her martial arts master, Master Steve Hogan of Vietnamese origins. She had sent to him the modern Vietnamese transcription of the document that Nick gave her the week before.

Clara, now in her thirties, was a former Major of the U. S. Army Military Police Corps. Currently, she worked as a private investigator, licensed in the state of California. During her training in the army, she had learned several languages including Vietnamese and Chinese. She was also fluent in Japanese which was her mother tongue. In 1970, her father, Peter Ikube, a native from Hawaii of Japanese descent, was captain in the Navy, assigned to a U.S. military base near Yokohama. During his stay in Japan, he met Masako, an English teacher. A year later, they were married in Hawaii. Their daughter Clara was born in 1975 in Guam, where Peter had been assigned at the end of the Vietnam War.

Clara first met Master Steve Hogan in California. She lives in Orange County not far from the ocean, and in the early morning she often runs and trains on the beach. One Saturday morning, upon arriving at the beach, she saw from a distance, the silhouette of a man exercising near the ocean. Piqued by curiosity, she approached the man who was completely focused in the execution of his movements. Although aware of the presence of Clara, he deliberately ignored her and continued his training.
