No 09 - HORSE Stance: Fighting and winning by Skillfulness and Patience

The Horse Stance is traditionally used for building strength and endurance. It is a stance that requires patience, as practitioners must hold it for extended periods, slowly building power in the legs, hips, and the center of body. In combat, the horse stance represents stability and a grounded approach, where victory comes not through hasty action, but through skill and the ability to wait for the right moment. Patience and skill are often more valuable than brute force.

POST  714

10 – TRACKING THE SACRED SEAL

While Thu-Lan, astride the motorcycle, was chasing the van with Clara’s kidnappers, she realized she had previously seen the man who had attacked her on the sidewalk. The day before, when she consulted documents with Clara at the National Library, she noticed that man sitting at a nearby table, often cast furtive glances at them and he also seemed very interested in their conversation. They had before them several ancient documents of different historical periods. These documents were very diverse, but, with their expertise, they had managed to establish a link between them. With Clara's sound knowledge of Japanese Kanji they could read and understand documents written in ancient Vietnamese Han-Viet, which is very close to Kanji. With the expertise of Thu-Lan in the history of Vietnam, they found historical facts that had been neglected by historians of the past, but that allowed a new interpretation of important historical figures such as King Le-Loi and Le-Lai.

Thu-Lan had noticed the great interest of their neighbor at the library while they were trying to decrypt a document describing some facts of the fifteenth century. The document was about a man named Nguyen-Tham and the Sacred Seal. They exchanged information and comments:

Thu-Lan: "Regarding the Seal, according to what is recounted in the book of the history of the Le dynasty, ‘Le Trieu Ngoc Pha Ky’, of which I have a personal copy, Le-Loi’s Seal had fallen from the sky into his garden in 1414, the sixth day of the first month of the year of the Horse. This golden Seal, measuring as described twenty-one by thirty-one centimetres, bore the inscription ‘Thuan Thien Le Loi’ meaning that Le-Loi had been appointed by Heaven. In the book, it is mentioned that the day Le-Loi found the Seal there was the imprint of a giant foot, more than a meter long, in his garden. In my opinion, this popular version is in the field of legend."

Clara: "You're right, this document describes here the presentation of the Seal to Le-Loi in 1414, the year of the Horse. Nguyen-Tham, one of the dignitaries of the Thuan-Thien Society for national protection, had the mission to hand in the Seal to Le-Loi. From what I read, the Seal was much smaller in size. Its base was a square of about four by four centimetres. A dragon sat on the top of the Seal to a full height of about eight centimetres. This gold Seal bore the inscription ‘Thuan Thien Bao Quoc’ which means ‘in accordance with Heaven to protect the country’. It is written that the nine dignitaries of the Thuan-Thien Society met to decide whether to support Le-Loi. During this meeting, they solemnly printed the Seal in the middle of a sheet of paper. It is also written that the nine dignitaries printed their own personal Seal on this sheet to ratify their agreement and that this operation had been repeated nine times, in order to have a copy of the agreement for each of them."

Thu-Lan: "This helps explain why Le Loi, when he was king in 1431, the year of the Dog, ordered the making of a twenty-one by thirty-one centimetre gold Seal with the engraved inscription ‘Thuan Thien Le Loi’. He later used this Seal on official acts, as it is written in the book. It was done to confirm the legend that he had previously spread on the dimensions of the Seal and the inscription on it. Le-Loi was very skilful in spreading extraordinary information."

Clara: "What did he do with the Seal of the Thuan-Thien Society?"

Thu-Lan: "According to the book 'Le Trieu Ngoc Pha Ky' on page five it is written that he kept the Thuan-Thien Seal in a golden box, so we can assume that the Seal given by the Thuan-Thien Society was also kept in a golden box."

Clara: "In this document here, it is also written that the Thuan-Thien Society did not approve of the dictatorial methods employed by Le-Loi when he became king. He had several of his combat comrades imprisoned or killed. The Society then decided that the king no longer deserved to hold the Sacred Seal and wanted to have it back. Secretly, a member of the Society, in the inner circle of the royal court, replaced the Sacred Seal with a replica which did not confer any legitimacy to the king."

Thu-Lan: "One can understand these precautions to protect the lives of members of the Thuan-Thien Society. If the king had discovered the disappearance of the Sacred Seal, he would immediately have taken steps to suppress the opposition."

The insistence with which their neighbour watched them and tried to listen to their words started to be a nuisance. Thu-Lan could not stay in the library any longer. They returned the documents and agreed to meet the next day.

No 07 - T-STANCE: Fighting and winning by Courage and Strength

The T-Stance reflects the balance between courage and strength. This stance offers a strong, stable position with the potential to launch powerful attacks. It signifies that victory is achieved through a combination of confidence (courage) and physical prowess (strength). Be courageous and face challenges head-on.

No 08 - TOWER Stance: People can trust you but you do not have to trust everyone

The Tower Stance represents the idea of stability and trustworthiness, but it also teaches discernment. Just as a tower stands tall and unshakable, you must develop a reliable character that others can trust. However, it’s important to exercise caution—trust must be earned, not given freely. Learn to discern who deserves your trust.

POST 713  (continued)

POST 713 …

Thu-Lan started her story: "In 1407, the Chinese Ming army began to invade Vietnam and in 1414 the country was occupied. Resistance to this occupation was organized, so, in 1418, Le-Loi, a rich farmer in the village of Lam-Son, in the Thanh-Hoa Province, raised an army. According to the legend, a fisherman found a sword in his net. Believing it to be of celestial origin and sacred, he offered it to Le-Loi for use in the war against the invaders. During the same period, Le Loi had found a Seal fallen from the sky in his garden. Those facts had been understood as the will of Heaven, thus, without questioning, Le-Loi had been recognized as the chief chosen from the Gods. After ten years of fighting, on 29 December 1427, the Chinese Ming capitulated and withdrew. Le-Loi became king and ruled over Vietnam under the name Le Thai-To. This is the legend, but according to the interpretations of historians, the Seal and the sword had been handed over to Le-Loi by the Thuan Thien Secret Society that had supported him.

Clara: "All this confirms the information about the Society for national protection, which is in the document given to me by my Master with some explanations when we met in Tokyo.»

Thu-Lan continued: "Then shortly after this, while Le-Loi was in a small boat on this lake, known in those days as Thuy-Luc, the Green Water Lake, a giant turtle appeared on the surface of the water. The king drew his sword and pointed it toward the turtle. The turtle took the sword into its mouth and disappeared under the water, into the depths of the lake. According to popular belief, the sacred turtle reclaimed the sword because the king had fulfilled his mission of liberating Vietnam and didn't need to possess it anymore. Since then the lake is called 'Lake of the Restored Sword'. It is believed that the sword is still there in the custody of the sacred turtle which keeps it safe for the next time Vietnam might have to defend its freedom. For a long time there was a doubt about the existence of giant turtles in the lake, but as you can see around 1968 a giant turtle died in the lake and is now exposed on the temple site. Also, recently, a giant turtle has been seen several times in the lake. This gives credence to the legend and you can really believe that the sacred sword is still at the bottom of the lake.

Clara: "So until that day, after the death of Quy-Su, nobody has managed to fulfill his sinister project of collecting one hundred swords, earned by winning combats, and place them in the lake. Quy-Su believed that the turtle would come to the surface bringing the sacred sword and then it would transform itself into a fighter. This fighter would have been ready to fight against Quy-Su for the liberation of the one hundred souls of the brave Trang-Si who perished by Quy-Su’s sword. Quy-Su was ready to win this last combat using as usual some subterfuges to possess the sacred sword. However, he did not know that members of the Thuan-Thien Secret Society had established a discreet surveillance close to the lake to prevent anyone from taking the sacred sword. Bao-Dan saved the country by killing Quy-Su during his combat at Nui-Hu. We have to continue to search for documents which could give us information about Bao-Dan and the Sacred Seal."

After visiting this magnificent temple, built on an island in the middle of the lake, they came back across the red wooden bridge The-Huc, to return to the city and end the evening in the famous Cha-Ca-La-Vong restaurant. The night had fallen. While walking in Hang-Ngang Street and preparing to go to Cha-Ca Street, a van stopped abruptly next to them. Before the two young women could be aware of any danger, the side door opened and a muscular man who was standing on the sidewalk, grabbed Clara from behind and jumped with her into the van, which quickly disappeared into a small side street. The man who had followed them, began to attack Thu-Lan to prevent her from intervening. Surprisingly, the man collapsed on the sidewalk, inert, with no obvious signs of injury. Quick as lightning, Thu-Lan “borrowed” a young man’s motorcycle arriving on the scene, jumped on it and chased after the van.
