POST 737 18 – THE TALL MONK

POST 737 18 – THE TALL MONK After being attacked by the thug who
had snatched his bag upon his arrival in Saigon, Lam-Tieu managed to stand
and pursue the thief. Unexpectedly, a tall monk wearing a saffron robe
stopped the thief running in the opposite direction by using the handle of
his umbrella to hook onto the bag. The thug did not release his prey and
tried to pull it toward him without success, although he appeared to be young
and muscular. He decided to attack the monk. Suddenly, the tall monk shouted
a powerful ki-ai (khi-tet) and the thief collapsed. Affected by the deafening
sound from the monk, the thief let go of the bag; he got up terror-stricken
and quickly disappeared into the crowd. Without saying a word, the monk
handed the bag to Lam-Tieu and walked away. Holding the bag in his hands,
Lam-Tieu wanted to thank his benefactor. He was astonished about how a person
could possess such an incredible power. Soon, he realized that the monk was
already far away, so he started to rush towards him. Surprisingly, the more
Lam-Tieu accelerated his pace the further the distance between him and the
monk would be. Thanks to the saffron-coloured robe of the monk, Lam-Tieu did
not lose sight of him in spite of the street being very crowded. Finally,
Lam-Tieu had to run and, in the end, he managed to reach the monk. He thanked
him profusely, and invited him to drink a cup of tea. The tall monk nodded and said: "I
know a Zen tea-room not far from here. The place is very peaceful." Lam-Tieu followed the monk. Entering
the tea-room, he immediately felt immersed into the tranquility of the
location. This was not the kind of place he usually frequented. The host who
greeted them bowed to the monk and invited them to sit at a table facing a
Zen garden with some small and delicate bamboo trees. When the tea was
served, slowly the monk raised the cup close to his face. With his eyes half
closed and his face reflecting quietness, he enjoyed the fragrance of the
tea. Lam-Tieu awkwardly tried to imitate the monk and discovered the pleasure
of savouring the well-known perfumed lotus tea. He did not dare to speak for
fear of breaking that magical moment. Gently, the monk put his tea cup back
on the table and slowly opened his eyes. His penetrating eyes came to rest on
Lam-Tieu, and from his mind power he knew immediately that Lam-Tieu was going
through a troubled and uncertain phase in his life. Without asking any
questions, the monk invited Lam-Tieu to follow him to the Long-Hoi pagoda. (to be continued) |
