GOZO, THE YELLOW ISLAND
Gozo is more than a name. It’s a symbol, a
secret. One sunny morning, from the main island of
Malta I came to this yellow island by boat when the wind was blowing hard as
to challenge my visit. Bright yellow, the color of the limestone in this
island is the soul of Gozo. The whole town is in bright yellow: churches,
hotels, restaurants, coffee shops, markets, and houses all are wearing this
same joyful color. I was staying in admiration when the bell of the Victoria
church announced the time in an unreal sound that seemed coming from a very
distant past. And the strong wind continued to howl as to remind that in
exploring this island the visitor must understand its long History and its
proud people. Nowhere in the world could I find a tiny island which gives me
this deep feeling of past centuries infused into the present time. The wine at IT-TOKK, an old restaurant near
the market, was more than a glass of red wine: It was a secret beverage from
the time some knights were hiding in this mysterious island when their battle
