Folk Dance and Martial Arts

For many, folk dance is often regarded as just another traditional dance form, one among various styles ranging from classical to modern. However, I see folk dance as something more profound -it is a hidden piece of history, preserved and passed down through generations within a specific community.

Folk dances often encapsulate the daily life, customs, beliefs, and historical experiences of the people who first performed them. As such, they are vital components of a nation’s cultural identity, expressed through movement. These dances help preserve the unique traditions and stories of a community or nation. Serving as elements of cultural heritage and symbols of pride, folk dances can imitate the movements of animals, celebrate the harvest, or honor deities, creating a bridge between the past and the present.

By examining folk dance through this historical lens, we can uncover various hidden aspects of the culture it represents. In this context, I perceive a connection between certain Vietnamese martial arts forms, known as “quyen,” and the foundations of folk dances. Like folk dance, Vietnamese martial forms mimic animal movements, honor deities, and convey historical narratives and strategies. Therefore, studying them in this way could elevate the practice of Vietnamese martial arts to a higher level of national culture and spirit, transcending mere combat techniques.
