… The day had started badly for Lam-Tieu. He had
quarrelled with his wife and had arrived late at his shop on Hang-Dong
Street, ‘Street of Copper’. While preparing to place the received goods in
the shop, the ringing of his cellphone indicated he had received a message.
It was an order by the boss of their gang, from Yokohama, who was soon to
arrive in Hanoi. Lam-Tieu was ordered to immediately look for any ancient
historical documents relevant to the Seal of king Le-Loi. 'The Boss' had to
gather as much information as possible to find an old map essential to their
project. Knowing the intransigence and cruelty of his boss, he dropped
everything to go and do some research at the National Library. Bad luck
followed him - he could not find the documents he wanted to consult. However,
he borrowed the book ‘Le Trieu Ngoc Pha Ky’, which tells the history of the
Le dynasty, hoping to find some clues. He sat at the only table available.
The table next to his was occupied by two beautiful young ladies who were
looking at some documents. They were very lively and often whispering to each
other. To his surprise, he discovered they had the very documents he was
looking for. Listening carefully, he grabbed a few sentences of their
conversation and realized they had a great knowledge of historical figures
related to the Sacred Seal. Shortly after, while they were preparing to leave
the library, he heard them agreeing for a meeting the next day, at 3:45 in
the afternoon, at the Thuy-Ta cafe located on Le-Thai-To Street, in front of
the Hoan-Kiem Lake. After they left, he hurried to consult the documents they
had returned. Being a Vietnamese of Chinese origin, he could read without
difficulty the ancient script of Vietnam, but it was difficult for him to
find any link between the various historical documents. Having noticed that
the two young women had considerable expertise and that they also had other
documents, he decided to organize, with help from members of his gang, the
abduction of the one girl who knew how to read old documents to question her. The next day, misfortune still pursued him.
While he was trying to neutralize Thu-Lan, he discovered at his expenses that
she was an expert in martial art and could master a lightning technique he
had only heard of. He was still lying on the sidewalk trying to recover his
senses when he heard the sound of sirens from police cars heading toward the
scene of the incident. This caused him a burst of energy. He got up and
stealthily he left the scene. Across the street, a tall, thin man wearing
dark clothes had been watching him with his piercing eyes, like those of an
eagle. While Lam-Tieu slipped away, the man followed him from afar. (to be continued) |
