POST 732

16 – THE INSIGNIFICANT-LOOKING MAN

On the train, Lam-Tieu, the shopkeeper, discreetly observed the other passengers. He kept his bag on his lap, although the seat next to him was empty. He did not want to lose sight of its gold reserve, approximately two kilograms divided into sixty sachets called lang. In Vietnam, as in other countries of monetary instability, people buy gold to build their economies. It is very easy to buy gold in specialty shops or jewellers, as small platelets contained in lang, sachets of approximately thirty two grams of gold. That way, it can easily be resold when needed. Common people do not buy gold certificates in the banks because they do not trust the banking system. While handicraft is relatively cheap in Vietnam, rich people can have solid objects made of gold, such as seals, turtles, vases or other ornaments they can hide in their home. Less wealthy people can keep gold in the form of jewellery such as rings, necklaces, bracelets or earrings.

Lulled by the monotonous movement of the train and exhausted by the events of recent days, Lam-Tieu soon fell asleep. Behind him, the insignificant-looking man, who got into the train at the last minute, was instead very alert!

Meanwhile, in the hotel room on Ba-Trieu Street in Hanoi, Clara and Thu-Lan continued examining the documents of master Dinh-Mai. They talked freely oblivious to Clara’s bag placed on a small table next to them, in which a microphone had been planted.

Clara: "This document is about the genealogy of the Dinh family, but here I read about the Nguyen family of the Cam-Giang district. It's strange because it seems that a strong bond links the two families Dinh and Nguyen, but I can't find any alliance by marriage."

Thu-Lan: "Yes, indeed it is unusual to provide information about another family who is not related by marriage to one's own."

Clara: "I don’t know whether this custom existed in Vietnam, but in Japan, two samurais considered themselves as brothers if they were close friends and served the same shogun. This might be a possible explanation."

Somewhere else in Hanoi, Nguyen-Luc, the slim policeman, was listening to this conversation with utmost interest. His face was full of astonishment, as if that conversation was explaining something he had been looking for a long time.

A sudden jolt of the train woke up Lam-Tieu with a start. With horror, he realized that his bag had disappeared from his lap. Panicked, he looked around him.
