THE STEPS ON SNOW

THE STEPS ON SNOW

It is a bright winter morning. For some time, I have been moving slowly along a snowy path that winds like a serpent deep into the picturesque conservation area of Petrie Island. The temperature has dropped to minus 14°C, typical for the season, but a biting wind makes it feel closer to minus 24°C.

The only sound accompanying me is the faint crunch of my steps on the icy trail. The woods, once dense with foliage, now stand bare and transparent, revealing a stark clarity that comes only in winter’s grip. Moving carefully through this cold stillness, I am acutely aware of not only my physical sensations, the sharp sting of the air, the weight of my movements, but also of my thoughts, my spirit, and the intangible part of myself.

With each step, my mind drifts freely. Sometimes it lingers on distant, happy memories or unforgettable moments from the past. At other times, it ventures forward, imagining future possibilities. This quiet, meandering walk brings an unexpected richness to my solitude, blending reflection and anticipation.

Along the isolated path, life still thrives in the cold. I encounter inquisitive black squirrels, playful little red squirrels, talkative and lively chickadees, nuthatches that scurry down trees head first and energetic hairy woodpeckers rhythmically striking trees. Even crows add their voices to the stillness. Every step I take leaves a mark in the snow, a transient record of my journey. In these moments, my body and mind are in harmony. There is no goal, no purpose to this walk, just the simple joy of being present in the world.

I once read about the hermits of the Himalayas, individuals who challenge the extreme cold by walking barefoot on thick snow, wearing only thin garments. Their ability to endure such conditions, honed through years of rigorous training, is astonishing. I deeply admire their discipline and resilience. Yet, if I ever had the chance to meet one of these hermits, I would ask: Is your purpose to conquer the cold, or is walking in the mountains, regardless of the weather, your true intention?

As for myself, I am no hermit. I walk for hours along quiet trails in every season, drawn not by a need to endure but by a love for the journey itself. I embrace life in society and hope for good health and a long future. I want to witness the ever-changing world, to see how long-held doctrines fade and new ideas take root. For now, though, I am here, just walking, happily, with the snow crunching softly beneath my feet.
