POST 724 13 – THE ORCHID |

POST 724 13 – THE ORCHID The wife of Master Dinh-Mai, a smiling woman
with a keen and intelligent eye, welcomed the arrival of Clara and Thu-Lan.
She directed them into the living room. On the left of the entrance, upon a
sideboard made of lacquered wood finely inlaid with mother of pearl, there
was the altar of the master’s ancestors. In front of the altar, Thu-Lan and
Clara bowed respectfully. According to tradition, a fruit dish containing
five kinds of fruit was placed in front of the portraits that Clara watched
attentively. It was the portrait of a stately man in the traditional Dignitary
costume, wearing the very characteristic winged hat that impressed her the
most. The master's wife asked them to sit down:
“Please, sit. I am going to make tea and the master will join you shortly”. Before going down to join his guests, master
Dinh-Mai read again a message he had received that morning. He had asked to a
master he knew in the United States, information about Clara, a disciple of
Master Steve Hogan. The answer he received was clear and concise: “Clara
Ikube: Chan-Cung disciple - 28.” The scent of lotus tea maintained a peaceful and
friendly atmosphere. The master, turning to Clara, asked: “Is the tradition
of the name of a disciple, vo-danh, maintained in your school in America?” Clara: “Are you talking about the tradition that
the master assigns a disciple name in Vietnamese to his students?” Master Dinh-Mai: “That's right”, and he looked
towards Thu-Lan who understood that she had to say her name. Thu-Lan: “My disciple name is Chan-Ban” Clara could not suppress an exclamation of surprise:
“Oh! It's amazing because my disciple name is Chan-Cung” Master Dinh-Mai said nothing, but seemed very
pleased to have been able to verify that Clara was indeed Chan-Cung.
According to the message, if Clara was Chan-Cung, the number 28 indicated
that Clara deserved trust. For her part, Clara soon realized that it was no
coincidence that her disciple name and the disciple name of Thu-Lan had a
common root “Chan”, which means true. She asked the master: “Is there a
system for assigning names based on certain criteria?” Master Dinh-Mai: “Yes, it is the tradition.
There is a book called Code of Names, which is used by some traditional
schools. The master assigns a name to his disciples after consulting this
book”. Clara said nothing but understood the importance of this tradition. This suggested that her school and the school of Master Dinh-Mai were among those using this book of names for their disciples. (to
