POST 739

19 - A FEARSOME MARTIAL ARTS MASTER

While Mr Nam was sitting in the back seat of the taxi taking him to the police station, a text message came from his superior Nguyen Luc ordering him to return to Hanoi immediately.

Mr Nam turned to the taxi driver: "Drive me back to the railway station, please."

Taxi driver: “Yes, sir! I'm going to turn back over there.”

The driver turned into a side street. About a minute later, the taxi stopped in front of an empty warehouse. The driver quickly got out and opened the rear door pointing a gun at the face of Mr Nam.

In a low and threatening voice he said: "Your wallet and your cellphone, quick!"

Calmly, Mr Nam began to follow the order, handing him his cellphone. The taxi driver, his gun in his right hand, still pointing to Mr Nam, held out his left hand to take the phone. Suddenly, he let out a howl of pain. His right wrist was twisted back and controlled by the left hand of Mr Nam. His gun instantaneously landed in the right hand of Mr Nam. It was not the first time Mr Nam used this very effective technique, called don tuoc sung, to disarm an attacker. Mr Nam then delivered a sharp blow to the back of the driver’s head using the gun’s handle to knock him out. With an exceptional strength, he pulled the inert driver onto the back seat of the taxi, like an ant pulling a big load. Slowly, he put his cellphone back in his pocket. He had applied to the driver the same secret technique that the police officer Nguyen-Luc had used to keep Lam-Tieu asleep for several hours, in the shop in Hanoi. The driver unable to fight back, Mr Nam began to search his clothes. He found a piece of identification inside his wallet. With his cellphone, he took a photo of the ID card and sent it with a text message to Nguyen-Luc. For safety, Mr Nam handcuffed the unconscious driver and then closed the rear door of the taxi. He got behind the wheel and took the road toward Hanoi.

Under a fragile and insignificant appearance hid a man endowed with a flashing swiftness, an almost supernatural strength, an iron will and an absolute determination for the respect of justice and freedom. Mr Nam is a master of martial arts from a school once renowned, but now operating underground due to the political circumstances of the country. His real name is not Tran Van-Nam. His birth name and his social origin had been kept secret until he was old enough to understand and protect himself.

In the 1940s, Mr Nam’s grandfather, a landowner in the district of Dai-Tu, Thai-Nguyen province, about one hundred kilometers north-west of Hanoi, was a fervent patriot who answered the call of the underground movement of Ho Chi-Minh to engage in the struggle for independence of the country, then occupied by the French. He had brought financial and logistical support to the Viet-Minh movement during this period of struggle on a regular basis, until the declaration of Vietnam's independence proclaimed by Ho Chi-Minh on September 2, 1945, and during the Indochina war against the French that followed. He was considered a benefactor of the Viet-Minh party led by Ho Chi-Minh. His son, the father of Mr Nam, was also involved in the Viet-Minh movement early in his youth.
