 ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
Sir Isaac Newton once said: If I saw further than others, it is because I was standing on the shoulders of giants.

The question is how to find giants? Real giants are visible only to those who have enough vision to discover them. The victorious and huge sumo you see on T. V. is surely impressive but not a real giant. The invisible man who coached him is.

POST 144 February 08 , 2014

 PARADOX OF THE MIND
The mind controls everything, but what controls the mind?
In martial art training  -for fighting, competition, or demonstration-  trainers often order to trainees to focus on the mind. "Keep your mind quiet and focused". But the problem for trainees, and possibly for trainers as well, is how to know Where the mind is and on What to keep it focused.
Is the mind located somewhere inside the brain or is it something existing beyond our physical body? Mind, thought, spirit, are all independent or are they rather different aspects of one ultimate invisible reality?
It has been accepted that the mind controls our action and reaction to the outside world. If so, here is a paradox of the mind: If the mind controls and directs us in our actions, we are subject of the mind. Being subject of our mind we cannot order it to be focused on anything.
Because of this paradox, perhaps it would be better not to tell the trainees to follow their mind but teach them some techniques that could train them to straighten their mind, their thought, and their spirit as part of their routine daily training.

We are in the period of VIETNAMESE ‘TET Festivities’ celebrating the New Year  from 31 January to 06 February.
BEST WISHES TO ALL.

 THE MIND
What is the mind?
We cannot analyse our mind in physical term and we cannot examine it out of our physical body.
Mind is a mysterious thing that everyone can understand it without really knowing what it is.

Let’s take an experience:
-Could you tell me what it is like for you to be ‘you’ ?

 WITHOUT BEING ASKED
In 1961, exactly 53 years ago, on the 20th of this month president J.F. Kennedy said in his famous Inaugural address ‘… ask not what your country can do for you –ask what you can do for your country.’  This famous quote has been inspiring to many people, including myself since the time I was a student. Then year after year the more I discovered more countries in the world the more I met people asking what they can do for their country and the less I saw these people doing good things without being asked to do. My dear fellows Black-Belts, do not ask what you can do, do the best you can without being asked to.

Did you volunteer to clean up the place where you did your exercises in recent days?

THE FORGOTTEN GENERAL

There are two kinds of generals. Those who won battles but failed to make lasting peace and those who failed to make lasting war but saved peace. In most cases people often admire those who have made their children die and forget those who have saved their lives.

POST 141  (through 19 January 2014)

   VIET-CHI-KIEM
 Teaching of Master Phan Hoang

VIET-CHI-KIEM
 Some codes and manners.   .
CODE .  Following are some most  important  points.
Respect is a very important aspect in the practice of VietChiKiem: We show respect to our teacher and our partners; we show respect to the place and to the audience; we show respect to our sword.  In giving or in receiving a sword we hold it with both hands, the edge turned toward the giver.
Self-Respect is not simply a moral principle but for us it is a practical way of being ourselves. Who he lacks self-respect lack moral.
Orientation and Direction are important to the practice of VietChiKiem. Doing our exercises in a natural setting (i.e. fields, hill, forest, lake, mountain)  we avoid facing directly toward the sun, especially at sunrise and sunset. In a training room (dao-duong, dojo) the direction we are facing is called by our code the direction of  the ‘South’. This helps a great deal to the correct orientation of our movements and sequences.
Numbers are part of our Code, this has nothing to do with the esoteric numerology.
Numbers are symbolic meaning and mathematical organization. The most used numbers in VietChiKiem are:
3   6   8  9  12  14  18  27  28  54  64  108

Counting.  When doing exercises we count up to 9 (not 10) then the counting continue with the next person .
Sitting  with the body right up (in the posture called ‘Pyramid’).
Good manners. Drawing , sheathing, returning the sword, sitting down, rising up, moving forward, turning backward, etc., all these gestures are codified in details for the sake of good manners.
Sounds are codified in our practice  as:
  A,  O,  I,  Tse,  U
Hand Seals. A series of twenty four hand-seals have been standardized by Grand Master Phan-Hoang for the use of VIET-CHI SYSTEM as a symbolic language, out of any religious meaning.
Seal of VietChiKiem. The Seal for VietChiKiem is under the code name S2 as shown below.
S2 – THE LUCIDITY - TUỆ GIÁC ẤN

Form: thumb-forefinger

Meaning: have a brilliant mind and lucidity

(French version)
Code et bonnes manières.

CODE.

S2 - LA LUCIDITÉ – TUE-GIAC-AN

THE BURDEN OF GIVEN NAMES

Assume that someone gives you a Christmas gift but you, for some reason, don’t want to have it. What would you do? Simply return it or discard it, and no one could force you to keep it. Now how about a given name which you dislike but it persistently sticks on you since the day you came to see this curious world. To get rid of it, in many countries, it is not easy, and legal procedures cost. Obviously this is not fair to us all.

I thought in an advanced society citizens should have the right to change their given name just through an administrative declaration, the day they get their first adult ID.

Name, place of birth, and mother tongue are sources for all kind of discriminations. In fact, we all were born at a same place, a very tiny village. It is called the Earth from a small province known as the Solar System, in the immense universe.

L’OEIL DE LA MER
THE EYE OF A SEA

(I was told there was a sea in the middle of these high mountains.
These mountains have covered the sea; except for her eye,
because she wants to see the sky
and all these nice guys
who want to see her eye.
So I went to check there,
and now I share
some pictures from over there …)

 MORSKIE OKU
I don’t know if the sea has a mind
But I do know a sea that has an eye
If you want to keep an eye on a sea
Here is the place you can see
The eye of a sea:
Go to Morskie
By horse and you will see
The eye of that sea.

Quelle surprise!
Et c’est vrai, tout est vrai!
Je suis arrivé à cheval
Jusqu’ici pour dire que
Cela est possible:
Une mer au milieu des montagnes
Il est aussi possible:
Des Hommes Vrais
Au milieu d’une marée
D’hommes sans âme.

KNOW THYSELF
You have certainly heard of this famous maxim ‘Known thyself’/Connais-toi toi-même (Socrates was not its author).  This Greek aphorism came from the Temple of Apollo, and people think that is a deep thought which could have hundreds ways of application from philosophy, psychology to politics, and so on. But let me suggest this aphorism, although famous, is purely a nonsense affirmation.

You and ‘thyself’ are just one. Therefore what you can know from ‘thyself’ is already known. The more you explore and analyze your ‘thyself’ the more you get biased information. Like when you look at your face through a mirror you can only get a mirrored image of yourself. No one can see one’s real face. ‘Know thyself’ is impossible./.

POST 136  (08 to15 December 2013)
CUNEO

 I first came to Cuneo last year, on April 19 2012. When approaching this old city by the  road from Torino we did not see anything that could tell we were entering to a city;
the road seemed to end at a beautiful mountain ahead, a mountain with snow on top. But a few moments later, I immediately felt that I liked this place; the people, the narrow streets, the central avenue, all are attractive.

I could not say Cuneo is a town typically Italian because any town in Italy is always really Italian. However Cuneo, this old Italian town, does has a specific place in my heart: A place of hope, a bridge between the past and the future. Under the lead of two young masters the whole group is full of enthusiastic students. One master is a professor of mathematics and the other is a psychologist; the training is hard and the spirit is high. They want to preserve high values from the past and apply new approaches of our art as a discipline to educate modern citizens: being strong, responsible, and helpful. Each time I come to train them I am enthusiastic and I feel I become younger.  They have opted a Vietnamese name for their group:
VO-VIET Dai-Bang which means ‘The Eagle of Vietnamese Martial Arts’

VIET-CHI-KIEM

THE ART OF PEACE-SWORD

INTRODUCTION- For centuries, the sword has been a weapon and a symbol of superiority. Although the beauty of some kinds of swords is very attractive, the main purpose of a sword still was a tool of killing. Therefore the techniques of majority of sword schools are based on fighting and killing. In such environment, it is hard for the practitioners to really keep their mind to be peaceful. They often understand peaceful focused mind is for wining superiority over the opponent. Nowadays, our modern society needs more strong and peaceful women and men than belligerent people.

WHAT IS VIET-CHI-KIEM, THE ART OF PEACE WORD?

This discipline is an art for Peace. The sword in VIET-CHI-KIEM is made of wood, which is the opposite to steel. Wood is a symbol of  Peace. When fighting is needed Viet-Chi-Kiem techniques could prove to be very strong in counter-attack against a metal sword, still all trainings and  techniques of Viet-Chi-Kiem are based on the purposes of Peace. Peaceful mind , and peaceful life are the aims of Viet-Chi-Kiem. Physical development, technical skills, strategy building, inner energy training, mental training, all are guided by Peace Spirit. Viet-Chi-Kiem is NOT another school of Sword, it is another way to consider the art of the sword. Rooted in the ancient Vietnamese art of the sword, VIET-CHI-KIEM is now a new discipline with a modern edge of research: A way of Peace, Self-development, and Happiness.

WHAT IS THE BENEFIT OF PRACTISING VIET-CHI-KIEM? The practice of VIET-CHI-KIEM brings us joy, discipline, confidence, inner energy, and peace in life.

DESCRIPTION OF PEACE-SWORDS VIET-CHI-KIEM.
There are three types of swords in VIET-CHI-KIEM for different purposes.
The length of blade depends on the height of the user; it is about the length from the first joint of the fingers to the end of the arm. The standard is of 60 centimeters.
Length of handle is equal to two times of the fist of the user.
The shield between blade and handle is in oval form (like a flower, the best is with 8 petals)
Type 1.  HANH-KIEM (Hành-Kiếm) - Wooden sword for all practices, inner energy and combat training. This is the most usual form of Peace-sword for many occasions.
For advanced practitionners there are two other categories.
Type 2.  TAM-KIEM (Tâm-Kiếm) - Wooden sword of advanced practitionners for training in meditation, self-healing.
Type 3.  TUONG-KIEM (Tuợng-Kiếm) – Sword made of steel for leaders and masters.

The wooden training sword HANH-KIEM is the easiest to be made with less formal requirement. However standard for solidity, simplicity, and beauty should be respected.
The wooden sword TAM-KIEM should be made with a wood of excellent quality.
In Vietnam, there is a wood named the Mun, western visitors in the 17th century once named it the iron wood . Another good wood well known in South Vietnam is named Cam-Lai. That is the reason why, in our jargon, we also call our good wooden Viet-Chi-Kiem Sword the "Cam-Lai-Kiem". In Western countries, the wood of oak is recommended among others of high quality.

CHI-KIEM is for short, the full name is VIET-CHI-KIEM: The Ultimate Sword for Peace.

KRAKOW (POLAND)
I can tell you that each city I have known in Poland has its own charms, its own characters and value. To me Krakow is the most attractive when you come to discover it at night! You cannot find the same ambiance as of Krakow elsewhere. Last year, October 2012, I arrived in Krakow late evening and found the heavy door of the hotel where I had made my reservation was closed! I rang, and rang, and rang again… no answer. Thanks to this incident I got an opportunity to appreciate the kindness of some people in this city helping me out and also the opportunity to explore Krakow deep at night. Krakow, especially at the Market Place, is unique. You should come there and see by yourself how vibrant this city is at night; full of activities around the Market Place. At midnight I even found a cycle-rickshaw on a narrow street.

In May 2005, at an historical place, surrounded by many friends, and excited to be there at that evening, I said on a spontaneous speech something as: The beauty of a country holds in its history, in its places, and in the soul of its people. When I walk here each stone tells me something about the past of this country, and these buildings around here all are witnessing the exceptional contribution of generations and generations of the people of Poland… POLAND, I LOVE!

DUBLIN
HISTORY OF THE IRISH COFFEE

To me, Dublin is a wonderful and mysterious city, a city far away from us, geographically and very close to us thanks to what are already familiar to us: Irish  Pub, Irish Cream, Irish Coffee, St Patrick Parade, Celtic music, and so on. Also some vague notions on the Celtic culture, the Gaelic language, the Ogham stones could help our imagination think of the mystical side of Ireland and dream of a visit to this island.

My first visit to Dublin dates back to about fifteen years ago, just after my visit at Oxford when my friend professor Kevin Sharpe, suggested me to make a visit to Trinity College.
Two days later I landed on Dublin and it was a rainy day.
This time, Autumn 2012, I came from Canada to Dublin by bus! Of course via Belfast and on a sunny day. The first thing I did was not going to Trinity College. Instead I made a stop at a famous coffee shop and enjoyed a strong Irish coffee while reading a History of Irish coffee.  As you can read on one of the attached pictures, Irish coffee was born thanks to a group of American tourists in a stormy day!
In this post I am glad to share with you some pictures of this wonderful city. Really Dublin is a magical place.

BONJOUR  A TOUS
HI EVERYONE
--------------------
Last year, end of September 2012, I came to Belfast from Paris for the first time. Of course, I have a lot of stories and experiences to share with you about arriving at the airport, how I failed from getting in a traffic accident; how I felt when I got lost at night and what I found in the streets very early morning the next day; how I could I immediately find a dentist for an emergency intervention; my thoughts about the future of this divided country, and so on. But the most impressive experience was falling, early morning Saturday 29, on a large group of people in uniform, armed with sticks. They were preparing to start with the Ulter Covenant Parade, a unique and grandiose parade I ever seen in term of motivation, organization, determination, and the beauty of  so many colourful music bands of men and women coming from everywhere in this country. I am pasting below for you some pictures and my spontaneous letter written in January 2013 when I was back home in Canada after a long travel from Belfast to Tokyo.   ( October 2013, Charles Phan-Hoang)

WHAT IS TUE-TU,
the Mind-Power-Brush practice?

TUE-TU, Mind-Power-Brush, is a method of training to explore one’s Inner-Power and to promote  personal-growth and self-healing. This method uses 26 Letter-Exercises –a creation of Tue-Tu- combined with the Six-liberating-sounds and the Six-symbolic-colors. Moreover, the practice of Six-breathing-techniques and the Six-postures tremendously add effectiveness to this art of Mind-Power-Brush in helping practitioners gain greater balance and self-confidence. Although this art of Tue-Tu uses the brush and some techniques of calligraphy it is not a school of calligraphy; no Chinese characters to learn, no skill in painting art needed.

Created in the 1980’s by Dr Charles Phan Hoang, a university professor of Research Methodology and a grand-master of Vietnamese martial arts, TUE-TU (wisdom and character) is definitely a unique approach to lasting personal-growth for everyone. Its motto: BE CONFIDENT, BE HAPPY.

I feel very happy walking through a quiet autumn path enjoying this nice weather here, and I know somewhere in the world there are some unhappy guys trying hard to convince me that they are the only good guys and the others are all bad guys. I respect their own view on the world and their love for war. So I let them where they are to fight between them because I remember the famous Galileo Galilei once said: You cannot teach a man anything, you can only help him find it within himself.
On this occasion I wrote the following Autumn Silent Voice.
