POST 711 …

After this historical reminder, the master took the opportunity to explain to Clara the importance of a Seal on individual level: “At individual level, a Seal is not only the signature of a person, but it represents a whole system of traditional and moral values and authority. It is the proof of the identity of the person, and his or her belonging to a group such as a family or a martial arts school, for example. This tradition continues today, in a very striking manner, in a country rich in traditions such as Japan. In Vietnam, since the use of the Latin alphabet for writing the language, the traditional use of the Seal tends to disappear. However, in the circle of artists, the traditional Seal is still frequently used for the signature of a literary work or a work of art. With regard to martial arts, the naming of a disciple and the attribution of a Seal by the master, are still significant. The name for a disciple, carefully selected, and the artistic value of the Seal reflect the spiritual level of the discipline.”

On these last words, master Steve Hogan, quietly opened a box and showed Clara a series of twelve Seals that an artist from Tokyo had crafted for twelve of his disciples. He taught her the code of the Seals, and how to examine a Seal as well as for authenticity as for artistic merit. Each Seal had a number attributed to it. At the twelfth Seal, the master paused and slowly took it in his hands. Ceremoniously, he printed the Seal on a fine sheet of rice paper. Clara watched admiringly the red imprint, awaiting her master's explanation because she did not understand the meaning of the two characters in Tue-Tu, the writing code created by her master. Master Hogan remained silent and took a pen with which he wrote two words: Chan-Cung which means ‘True Fighter’. He put the Seal back in its beautiful case and solemnly handed it to Clara. Respectfully, lowering her head, she received it, feeling very proud.

Full of enthusiasm for her mission, Chan-Cung Clara left the center.
