POST 326 – 23JAN2016

EXERCISE AND STRATEGY:

THAN-TOC, DAO PHONG

Teaching of g.m phan hoang

(see attached pictures)
TECHNICAL TRAINING. This exercise aims to develop the rapidity and the precision of a hand technique called ‘Sword attack without sword’ from VIET-CHI-KIEM black-belt program of Vietnamese Art of The Sword. Advanced level will be taught by black-belt-teachers and red-belt-masters at diverse Spring 2016 Training Sessions.

STRATEGY IN COMBAT AND IN LIFE.
In response to the attack of an aggressor who uses the stratagem of Dương-Oai, Diễu-Võ (Showing off power and bullying) the solution could be applying this Strategy of Thần-Tốc, Đảo-Phong (Attack like surprising fire, retreat like unnoticed wind), this means attacking by surprise with full  force and speed, then retreat like a wind blowing away –then come back hitting at a  flank, and so on, likely in the following scenario:
1.Stay still like a mountain (showing no sign) while the enemy is showing off his power to impress you.
2.In a sudden, with full force, speed and precision, hit his vital point, cutting off his rhythm, causing painful effect.
3.Retreat (in the blink of an eye, change direction) and hit his ‘tail’ (groin, legs)
4.Change direction and hit his ‘tail/ or head’ in a way that put the enemy in situation of not knowing where to defense next.
5.Jump away to a distance out of reach of the enemy and prepare for the next move.

HISTORY.

The case of the  Russo-Japanese War  can illustrate the advantage of this Strategy of Than-Toc, Dao-Phong

The Russo-Japanese War
8 February 1904 – 5 September 1905
Tsarist Russia, as a major imperial power, had ambitions in the East. Russia sought a warm-water port on the Pacific Ocean for their navy and for maritime trade. Vladivostok was operational only during the summer, whereas Port Arthur, a naval base in Liaodong Province leased to Russia by China, was operational all year.
Nicholas II held the Japanese in contempt as "yellow monkeys", and he took for granted that the Japanese would simply yield in the face of Russia's superior power.
Japan issued a declaration of war on 8 February 1904. However, three hours before Japan's declaration of war was received by the Russian government, the Japanese Imperial Navy attacked the Russian Far East Fleet at Port Arthur. Tsar Nicholas II was stunned by news of the attack. He could not believe that Japan would commit an act of war without a formal declaration, and had been assured by his ministers that the Japanese would not fight. When the attack came, according to Cecil Spring Rice, first secretary at the British Embassy, it left the Tsar "almost incredulous".
The war concluded with the Treaty of Portsmouth, mediated by US President Theodore Roosevelt. The complete victory of the Japanese military surprised world observers. /.

THE FORGOTTEN GENERAL

There are two kinds of generals. Those who won battles but failed to make lasting peace and those who failed to make lasting war but saved peace. In most cases people often admire those who have made their children die and forget those who have saved their lives.

VIET-CHI-KIEM
 Some codes and manners.   .
CODE .  Following are some most  important  points.
Respect is a very important aspect in the practice of VietChiKiem: We show respect to our teacher and our partners; we show respect to the place and to the audience; we show respect to our sword.  In giving or in receiving a sword we hold it with both hands, the edge turned toward the giver.
Self-Respect is not simply a moral principle but for us it is a practical way of being ourselves. Who he lacks self-respect lack moral.
Orientation and Direction are important to the practice of VietChiKiem. Doing our exercises in a natural setting (i.e. fields, hill, forest, lake, mountain)  we avoid facing directly toward the sun, especially at sunrise and sunset. In a training room (dao-duong, dojo) the direction we are facing is called by our code the direction of  the ‘South’. This helps a great deal to the correct orientation of our movements and sequences.
Numbers are part of our Code, this has nothing to do with the esoteric numerology.
Numbers are symbolic meaning and mathematical organization. The most used numbers in VietChiKiem are:
3   6   8  9  12  14  18  27  28  54  64  108

Counting.  When doing exercises we count up to 9 (not 10) then the counting continue with the next person .
Sitting  with the body right up (in the posture called ‘Pyramid’).
Good manners. Drawing , sheathing, returning the sword, sitting down, rising up, moving forward, turning backward, etc., all these gestures are codified in details for the sake of good manners.
Sounds are codified in our practice  as:
  A,  O,  I,  Tse,  U
Hand Seals. A series of twenty four hand-seals have been standardized by Grand Master Phan-Hoang for the use of VIET-CHI SYSTEM as a symbolic language, out of any religious meaning.
Seal of VietChiKiem. The Seal for VietChiKiem is under the code name S2 as shown below.
S2 – THE LUCIDITY - TUỆ GIÁC ẤN

Form: thumb-forefinger

Meaning: have a brilliant mind and lucidity

(French version)
Code et bonnes manières.

CODE.

-Power of saying NO

Cloud & Tree (2013) raises the question HOW TO CLEAR THE MIND AND REACH THE REAL NATURE OF THINGS.

TUE-TU, Mind-Power-Brush, is a method of training to explore one’s Inner-Power and to promote  personal-growth and self-healing. This method uses 26 Letter-Exercises –a creation of Tue-Tu- in helping practitioners gain greater balance and self-confidence through brush calligraphy. Although this art of Tue-Tu uses the brush and some techniques of calligraphy it is not a school of calligraphy; no Chinese characters to learn, no skill in painting art needed.

Created in the 1980’s by Dr Charles Phan Hoang, a Canadian university professor of Research Methodology and a grand-master of Vietnamese martial arts, TUE-TU (wisdom and character) is definitely a unique approach to lasting personal-growth for everyone. Its motto: BE CONFIDENT, BE HAPPY.
