VIETCHIDAO
CASE STUDY:

THE CASE ELBOWS 31

THE CASE ELBOWS 31
Case Study, along with Collaborative Learning, is a good method of learning and teaching in Vietchidao system. Case Study can be defined in a simple way as a study in depth of a phenomenon (situation, movement, event, specific group) aiming to generalize it for theoretical knowledge or practical application.
The 36 Movements in Tam-Phap offer a number of opportunities for Case Study. As an example, in this chapter we are interested to the Movement 31. The Movement 31 shows three Elbow Techniques in a flow of attacks: Upward Elbow (Cho Len), Perpendicular Elbow (Cho Doc), and Thrust Elbow (Cho Xan). For the purpose of teaching and learning Tam-Phap this case study could be designed in a following way to guide a teacher.
Step 1.  Make your students understand that movements presented in a quyen are to be adapted and inserted into the flow of that quyen , so sometimes they are not really executed in a strict manner as they are to be taught in a formal teaching, more over they are not executed in all four directions. Therefore first of all you are going to ‘extract’ from the Movement 31 these three elbow techniques and train your students in three separated exercises under the rule of symmetry (right and left). 1.Cho Len  Upward Elbow  2.Cho Doc  Perpendicular Elbow 3.Cho Xan   Thrust Elbow
Step 2. In a collaborative way, learners and teacher are engaging in an exploration of several scenarios where the three elbow techniques are developed and applied along with the corresponding defense and counterattack, under the view of real combat.
Step 3.Under the guidance of the teacher, after critical discussion the group retains the best scenario.
Step 4.Under the guidance of the teacher, the group improves the selected scenario and makes it a Case they can practice in their regular training program.
NOTE: The teachers can also take the opportunity of this case study to make their students revising all the Twelve Elbow Techniques. For this purpose here after the reader will find the list of Twelve Elbow Techniques and their corresponding pictures.
