 PUEBLA ADVENTURE, Last Part
 Charles Phan Hoang

(From Post 437 to Post 441)

(Start at Post 437) I said to myself, today it will be a nice day, nothing to do, no plan for any kind of research to prepare. My next teaching will take place only in ten days so I have plenty of time to do whatever I like in this quiet place called Villas de la Hacienda. My apartment was at 206A Paseo del Aquaducto, in one of the two high buildings uphill, just close to the university “El TEC”, the popular name for the Monterrey Institute of Technology in Estado de Mexico.

It was Sunday January 07, 2007 and I was enormously enjoying the warm weather of Mexico while in Ottawa, my home town, the temperature must have been down below minus 20 degree Celsius, heavy snow everywhere! At eleven o’clock I went out just for a walk and thought that I will be back after taking lunch at Mondo-e, a modern shopping center in the city of Atizapan. Then I did not go back that day; not the next day; not the day after... I disappeared for a whole week!
What happened to me in this unsafe country? No one among my colleagues could really know about my story, I just told them I went to Puebla, a picturesque town, two hours south of Mexico City. In fact, an unexpected adventure happened to me around noon of that day.

(Post 438) I said at eleven o’clock (January 07, 2007) I went out just for a walk and thought I will be back after taking lunch at Mondo-e, a modern shopping center in Atizapan. Then I did not go back that day neither the next day and nor the day after... I disappeared for a whole week! What happened to me in this unsafe city?

Mexico is a large city with a population of about eight million people. But I believe, adding all these populous suburbs to it, the metropolitan area would have more than 20 million people covering many hills and flat areas. So this is a complicate and intriguing mega city. No one could pretend to know all parts of this city. A giant network of buses tries hard more or less to cover the whole city, and the traffic jam on the Periferico is just incredible.

That Sunday morning I had time and I wanted to take a bus to go to Monde-e. The bus was a very old but picturesque one that climbed very slowly uphill and then went downhill with crazy speed and full volume of music. It was a dangerous game, but also it was an exciting bus to me, the unforgettable Mexican bus. So I changed my mind when the bus was approaching the place of Mondo-e.  I did not get off. I wanted to know at what part of this immense city the last stop will be. After a long run through some busy avenues and narrow streets the bus dropped me in a dirty area that did not seem much safe. Another bus passed by and I quickly got in, no matter where it will go. Finally this bus took me to a large place, clean and pleasant: the busy terminal of inter-city bus. Most of Mexican buses that link cities to cities are quite comfortable. Arriving here I did not want simply to go back home, so I came forward to a ticket counter and asked the lady the time of a next departure. She was surprised and asked back: Where do you want to go? I said I don’t know, but I will take any bus departing soon.  She smiled and told me that in a few minutes the bus to Puebla will leave. Without hesitation I bought a ticket to Puebla, two hours away, thinking that I will go back to Mexico City late at night. But I did not go back...

(Post 439, 440) Upon arriving to Puebla I thought that I will go back to Mexico City late evening. But the ambience of Puebla that day was so attractive. Music, dances, shows of street entertainers, interesting shops, artifacts exhibition, restaurants, people … all were for me to discover. Like a child I was curious about everything, enjoying each of the wonderful moments I was there until late night. Then I thought why go back to Mexico City where no one was awaiting me that evening?
For less than fifty dollars I got a room in a nice hotel, right at the Zocalo, central place of Puebla. The next day morning I went to the bus station intending to take a bus back home. But the weather continued to be really pleasant; the call for adventure became higher and higher in my soul. I found that a bus will soon depart but going south to Oaxaca rather than north to Mexico City.

Three days later, after Oaxaca, Juchitan, and Tuxtla, I arrived in San Cristobal de Las Casas, 900 kilometers away from Mexico City. Would my adventure end here or will it continue further?

(Post 441) Once I am on the long road of adventure it is always hard for me to go back. The reason is quite simple, I was born for traveling, I believe. Yes, I left Hanoi 66 years ago, in 1954, and Saigon 1962, so far I have no plan for returning there. In my opinion it does not require permanent residence to love a country, but it requires contribution, in various ways of action that include ‘doing’ and ‘not doing’ for the good of the country. In my life, among 79 countries I have visited or I have known well, I think “My Country” should include several countries by citizenship, by profession, or by heart. In case of conflict between these countries my choice of side will follow a simple principle: Do not follow the blind love for a country, follow the duty of good people in a civilized society.

After visiting San Cristobal de Las Casas, I continued heading south for the three next days through Villahermosa, Campeche, and Merida. In the evening of Saturday 13 January 2007 I arrived in Palenque, a small town famous for its Palenque Ruins and nice water falls. I got a room in a small hotel, just ten minutes from the bus station, in following two travelers who already had a room reserved here. It was a happy evening in this quiet Mexican town. The
“Zocalo”, the central place of the town, was just in a short distance from my hotel and the lively music attracted me to go there. Someone was playing flute and the first piece I heard was the El Condor Pasa! Oh, that is a piece I loved so much that I have created in 1996,  a “quyen” ( a “kata”, a series of  martial art movements) bearing the name of  Eighteen  Birds (Thap Bat Dieu) using El Condor Pasa as a background music. I sat quietly enjoying the music, dreaming to be in a world of wonder, a world of imagination, a world of multi-dimensions where we can change destiny. At that evening, in Palenque, my mind started creating some movements for another “quyen”  that years later will be known as the Eight Birds (taught at Caldonazzo, Italy, 2014).

I left the central place when it was already getting dark. Out of my dream, back to the reality, I realized that I got lost because I could not remember from what side I had come to this place. After a few moments I finally found the way back to the bus station. My hotel is not far from this place but in the dark I could not find it and I had not written its address somewhere. After one hour turning around I felt hopeless when the streets became now deserted. Then I decided to knock at a door that was half closed but still having light inside, to ask for help. A young lady kindly opened the door and I recognized her face. I was at my hotel! I could not find it as they did not have a sign and moreover they had closed the door early that evening…

The next day I visited the Ruins of Palenque, about 10km away. I forgot my misfortune of the last night to live some intense moments of thoughts and questions at this impressive historical place. What caused the fall of these intelligent and strong people many centuries ago?

The way back to Mexico City was not easy. By bus, there was only one departure late evening, the bus ran for 13 hours through the night to arrive in Mexico City the next day morning. After about one hour on the road the bus stopped; some immigration agents got on board and started checking passengers because we were not far from the borders. Oh my God! I left my apartment last week without my passport, only two credit cards sleeping in my pocket and my strong inner power, that’s all I had to prove who I am or I am not!

Luckily, the bus arrived on time in this busy Mexico City. I was tired but happy. My adventure of January 2007 ended there, but my question continue in 2020 when I am writing this letter: Today, what are the key factors that could help Mexico, a great country of 130 million people, just next door to the USA, to take off rapidly when our world is in a dramatic change?

    L’ITALIE ETERNELLE
      Charles Phan Hoang

"Non dimenticherò mai
Questo giorno d'inverno
È stata subdolamente attaccata
Gravemente ferita
Da lontano, dal Canada, ho pianto
Sopraffatto dal dolore profondo
Ma mi alzo subito
in piedi, puntando il dito verso est
L'Italia vincerà!
Sconfiggerai tutte questi corona!
Perché ti amo, l’Italia
Dove ho così tanti amici…."

(17.03.2020 - GM Charles Phan Hoang)

L’ITALIE ETERNELLE

Je n’oublierai jamais
Ce jour sombre d’hiver
Elle fut sournoisement attaquée
Grièvement blessée
De loin, du Canada, j’ai pleuré
Envahi d’une profonde douleur
Mais je me ressaisis aussitôt
Debout, pointant mon doigt vers l’est
L’Italie vaincra!
Tu vaincras tous ces coronas!
Car je t’aime, l’Italie
J’y ai tant d’amis…

 POST  425                                 07 December 2019
 Part Four  NHAT-LUYEN-GONG:
 MINDFULNESS

Our mind has a great influence on our life. So each one of these five exercises does contain a thought for mind reference in our training. The original teaching is embedded in the following Vietnamese poem from which we will try to adapt the meaning for each exercise, in the context of this Post 425.
“THIỆU NHẬT LUYỆN GỒNG  -Phan Hoang-
Trời cao đất rộng là cha
Đại dương tuyệt diệu ấy là mẹ tôi
Bạn bè chung thủy trọn đời
Chân tâm xâu thẳm rạng ngời tuệ quan
Tình yêu chân thật vô vàn
Sống trong nhân loại biết nhường biết tha./. ’’

Exercise 1 (Father). The immensity of the sky teaches me, like a father, vision and direction.
Trời cao đất rộng là cha

Exercise 2 (Mother). The wonderful ocean shows me, like a mother, how generous life is.
Đại dương tuyệt diệu ấy là mẹ tôi

Exercise 3 (Friends).  Towards friends and companions I want to affirm my deep loyalty.
Bạn bè chung thủy trọn đời

Exercise 4 (Critical thinking). Critical thinking is a hard way that helps me to discover the truth in life.
Chân tâm xâu thẳm rạng ngời tuệ quan

Exercise 5 (Love). Sincerity in love is the nature of my heart; knowing to forgive is my way of life.
Tình yêu chân thật vô vàn
Sống trong nhân loại biết nhường biết tha
