THE STARTING POINT OF A QUYEN
The
starting point is the place where you begin the quyen. By convention,
whatever the real direction is, you are facing the direction south.
Therefore, your left hand side is considered the direction east, and your
right hand side the west. Remember that at
the end of the quyen you should be back exactly at the starting point.
Probably one could ask Why is this rule important? There are some reasons for
that and it is important to know them.
-First of
all, this rule could help the student detect some error or imperfection that
could have been committed during the execution of the quyen if it is ending
at a place far from the starting point.
We know that most of our quyen do have a number of movements fitting
in our series of numbers: 6, 8, 12,
18, 24, 28, 36, 54, 81, 108 , and the structure of the quyen was designed
in a way that it will end at the starting point if it is executed correctly.
-Second,
in a training session we do repeat the quyen again and again. Consequently,
after a while if this rule is not observed, we will get lost or need more
space.
-Third, in
advanced study, the quyen will be practiced in both sides under the law of
symmetry and then in four directions. This means when we finish the quyen and
come back to the starting point we will restart in the opposite way like
looking in a mirror. In this stage, the starting point has all its
importance.
Now I
could tell you that learning a quyen is not simply learning its form, speed,
energy, strategy, application, meaning and so on. A good student should
explore all the different moving steps and stances in a quyen and will find
that these steps and stances are not always in the same length. These
differences in length cause the difficulty for ending the quyen exactly at
the starting point. The exciting
challenge is to discover the best way to adjust these steps and stances in
order to finish correctly the quyen. Usually the best place to adjust is at
the two first movements when the quyen starts, or at the three last movements
before the end of the quyen. This rule is not absolute, depending on each
quyen the adjustment could happen at any movement./.
