	POST 701   4 - THE COLLECTOR OF HEADS Clara began to read the ancient document written in Chu-Nom that master Steve Hogan had given to her. After a few difficulties, because some characters in the document were almost faded, she managed to reconstruct the whole story and she was immediately captivated. The story began as follows: Year 1583, Province of Yen-Bai, Vietnam In a rainy autumn day in 1583, year of the Goat, a stranger arrived to a small hamlet located in the far northern part of Yen-Bai Province. No one knew from where he had come with a handful of henchmen to this distant and desolate place. He then established his mysterious headquarters there. He called himself Quy-Su, the ‘demon-master’ and the local people were also pleased to call him by this name although he had not done any harm to them so far. However, his face with a bulky forehead, large white teeth, bright eyes full of envy and cruelty, showed his dark inner soul. He was tall and fast-moving. His slashing long sword seemed invincible. From his arrival this place bore the name of Nui-Hu, the ‘howling-mountain’ because of the dreary sounds people often heard at night. This place was not really a high mountain, but constituted by several hills. Narrow gaps in between them offered passes from the plain below up to the higher mountains ahead, and down to the other side as a short cut. The isolated path going to the mountains was crossing through Quy-Su's place and now was under his control. The narrow road passing there was frequented only by poor travellers and fearless ‘trang-si’, those strong men who wanted to get through the mountains by this shortcut and save two days against those who took the easier lower way.     (to be continued)

Clara, with sparkling eyes: “Master, this is all very exciting! From the day I’ve had this ancient document, I've had a strong desire to find the first part, because obviously the document we have here is the second part of one single document. I also want to identify the seal which is affixed on it. What you just told me makes me think it could be the Sacred Seal, but we must prove it. Also, it would help a lot if it were possible to know at what time the book has been written.”

Master Hogan, sure of himself: “I have already determined the period during which it certainly was written.”

Clara: “Master, I was sure you could help me. How did you find it?”

Master Hogan: “At the beginning, the author indicates the unit of measurement of time he uses in his poems, that is about a hundred years which was considered to be the maximum length of human life, and he used the Vietnamese calendar years in his predictions. Here are some examples of prophecies written in the document:

        ‘In a half-life when the Monkey arrives, the light will go off and a blue dynasty will begin in the northern country'

"I could interpret that it as 1644, the year of the Monkey. During that year, in China, the Ming Dynasty (meaning 'light' in Vietnamese) was overthrown and the Qing Dynasty (meaning 'blue' in Vietnamese) took power. By calculating the half-life, this prophecy was made in 1600.     

"Another example:

        ‘In three lives, the Cat will help men to fly in the sky and the small Eastern Snake will defeat the Northern Bear.’

I interpreted that as the year 1903, year of the Cat, during which one of the first aero-planes flew. 1905, year of the Snake, marks the end of the Russo-Japanese war - Japan defeated Russia.     

"Another prediction:

        ‘In three and a half lives, Rooster pours thunder that destroys entire cities.’     

"This is the year 1945, year of the Rooster, when the atomic bomb was dropped on Japan.

"These excerpts of predictions prove that this document has been written around 1600. We can suppose that the seal affixed at the end of the document is that of the Thuan-Thien Society.”

Clara, enthusiastic: “My decision is made. I'll go to Vietnam to research the matter. Right now, I have some ongoing business I have to attend to. Then I can be away for a few months.”

Master Hogan: “You are full of dynamism and competence to undertake such a mission and I am supporting you for your project. However, you’re going to need local support. I have a cousin in Hanoi whose daughter, Thu-Lan, is about your age. She is a university professor in History. She is very knowledgeable in her field and she will help you find the ancient historical documents. In addition, she shares something with you because she is also an expert in martial arts.”

Master Hogan gave a document to Clara: “I have prepared for you this copy of the ancient document in my possession. In a few days, I'm going to Tokyo where I shall stay for a month.”

Clara, taking the copy of the document and bowing: “Thank you master. In about two weeks, I'll go to Hanoi.”

	POST 699  (continued) The master continued: “The contents of this document and the writing used in the form of poems, immediately brought to my mind a famous ancient book of Vietnam, written around the middle of the sixteenth century: Sam Trang Trinh. It contains prophecies about Vietnam over a period of five hundred years. This book is very popular in Vietnam and to give you an idea, we can compare it to the book of Nostradamus in the West.” Holding the old document, her master said: “This document is also a work of prophecies indicating events that will occur in the world outside of Vietnam. It's interesting but what is more important is the seal affixed to it. Clearly, these four characters Thuan Thien Bao Quoc are those of the national Sacred Seal. I have evoked this seal during an international training session, but without going into detail. Today, I will tell you the story of this seal. "We have to go back to the reign of king Ly Thanh-Tong, who was king of Vietnam from 1128 CE to 1138 CE. Ly Thanh-Tong had been chosen to be king as the previous king did not have an heir. Early in his reign, there were conspiracies and challenges that questioned his legitimacy, therefore, he chose his reigning name as Thien-Thuan, which means he was reigning by the will of Heaven. Being a devout Buddhist, he was aware of the impermanence of things, and he thought that a dynasty would sooner or later fall into decline so he may fail his mission to protect the nation. Under his auspices, a national Society for the protection of the nation was created with the name Thuan-Thien, which was the reverse of the king’s reigning name. Its meaning is ‘Acting in accordance with the Law of Heaven’. Recruiting of members was made secretly, according to criteria of uprightness and loyalty to the nation, without attachment to the ruling dynasty. At its foundation, the Society had one hundred and eight members representing all classes of the population of the kingdom. The motto of the Society was Thuan Thien Bao Quoc, meaning 'in accordance with Heaven to protect the country'. The Society created a gold Seal called the Sacred Seal. On this Seal, symbol of national legitimacy, were engraved the four characters of the motto Thuan Thien Bao Quoc. As a precaution, for strategic usage, the Society had commissioned a replica of the seal, identical in appearance, but whose imprint was slightly smaller. This second seal did not hold the symbolic power of the original one. One of the Society's missions was to protect the Sacred Seal. Unfortunately, with all the historical upheavals and events, we do not know where the Seal is today. However, according to reliable sources, it is still in Vietnam. I am convinced that documents exist which would allow us to trace it and find it. I’ve got a reproduction of an ancient document dating from the seventeenth century in which it is stated that the seal must be protected.” (to be continued)
