POST 738 … In the meantime, in Hanoi, over
seventeen hundred kilometres from Saigon, Thu-Lan and Clara continued to read
the documents of the genealogy of Master Dinh-Mai. Clara was reading a
document which gave some details on the link between the Nguyen family and
the Dinh family of Cam-Giang. Clara said to Thu-Lan: "This is a
document written under the reign of King Le Huyen-Tong." Thu-Lan, giving precise historical
details: "This means that it has been written between 1663 and 1671, the
years of the reign of this king. During this period, the general Dinh Van Ta,
an ancestor of Master Dinh-Mai, won the famous victory against the Mac in the
province of Cao-Bang in 1667." Clara: "Here is what was written
by a member of the Nguyen family, from the district of Cam-Giang": From the origin to the beginning of
the reign of King Thieu-Binh (1434-1439), our Nguyen family was living in the
village of Dung-Tu near Lam Son, in the province of Thanh-Hoa. Then, our
ancestor Nguyen-Thi left the village to settle in the district of Cam-Giang,
in the province of Hai-Duong, to live close to the Dinh family, fulfilling
the wishes of his father Nguyen-Tham. Since then, Cam-Giang is considered as
the place of the new origin; however, we continue maintaining relationship
with our cousins in the area of Lam-Son. Thu-Lan: "Leaving permanently the
village of ancestors was not a decision that could be taken lightly. This
could happen against the will of somebody for serious reasons. It was a
voluntary act to fulfill the wish of an ancestor that his descendants decided
to live close to another family. This is unusual and what is even more
important is the fact that the new place is considered as the origin of the
Nguyen family." Clara: "Yes, you're right. What
could be underneath such a motivation? This might be related to an important
historical event." Thu-Lan, "You just said that the
original village is the village of Dung-Tu near Lam-Son, isn’t it?" Clara: "Yes, that's what is
written here." Thu-Lan: "The village of Dung-Tu
is also the village of the famous national hero Le-Lai. The anniversary of
his death is celebrated on the twenty-first day of the eighth lunar month.
According to official history, in the year 1419, the future king Le-Loi, leader
of the resistance, was fighting against the Chinese Ming army. One day, he
and his army were encircled by the enemy. Le-Lai, one of Le-Loi’s generals,
had the idea to run the following subterfuge: he disguised as Le-Loi by
wearing Le-Loi’s armour and took his place in the command of the royal
elephant to trick the enemy to believe that Le-Loi would fight in a suicidal
combat. Thus, through the sacrifice of Le-Lai, the future king Le-Loi,
disguised as a peasant, was able to escape the enemy and continue to lead the
resistance until the final victory in 1428." Clara: "Both names, Le-Loi and
Le-Lai, are very similar. Were they relatives?" Thu-Lan: "No, not to our
knowledge. For Le-Loi, this is his real name, but for Le-Lai, it is the name
that was attributed by Le-Loi. According to Vietnamese tradition, it was
common that the king gave his family name to very close and loyal people around
him. Thus, the king considered them as part of his family. This tradition
still exists in the martial arts world. The master can include his family
name in the name given to his disciples." Meanwhile in Thanh-Hoa, about hundred
and fifty kilometres south of Hanoi, the very banal trip by taxi from the
train station to the police station down-town of Mr Nam, the
insignificant-looking man who had been tailing Lam-Tieu on the train, took an
