MALTA, A nice Republic This morning I am at the Café Matteo on St Lucia street, in Valletta, the walled
capital of Malta. And I feel like being on the way back to a few centuries in
the past. Valletta was built in the 16th century by the Knights of
Saint John. These knights came to Malta after the painful loss of their base
in Rhodes. In this city old fortifications and bastions seem being here as witnesses
of terrible wars, defenses and conflicts through the history of Malta:
Ottoman attacks, Napoleon invasion, British ruling. Today Valletta is a very pleasant city with good
restaurants, nice coffee-shops, museums, important churches, historic
palaces, Italian architecture style and many activities of all kinds. I can
tell that I am enjoying enormously my visit here. Streets are clean and seem safe, so far for
me. On the large marina I saw a number of luxurious yachts of rich owners.
There is a good public bus service and sometimes I also took a bus to explore
some distant areas. In this republic, people are driving on the left hand
side, and almost everyone understands English. Only a half of million souls
live in this nice republic but every year some millions of tourists invade
Malta. I have met some European students who came here working during the
high season and they told me that they were happy with their working
experience. Malta is now a member of
the European Union and it is very easy to fly here from Italy. That was what
I did to come here. At the time I was a student, travelling to Malta was not
