MY FIRST CUP OF AMERICAN COFFEE Post 659

MY FIRST CUP OF AMERICAN COFFEE It was a beautiful spring day in 1983, and my Greyhound bus had made a stop at a location that resembled a deserted town from a western movie. Everything was new to me, as I was exploring America on my own like a curious teenager, leaving my hometown in France to discover the New World. My English was limited, and my funds were less than what I had imagined while embarking on this journey. After an extensive travel, exhaustion was beginning to set in, but my curiosity and burning desire to learn about anything new overrode physical fatigue. I learned English on the bus and exercised my mind while walking in new places. However, at this location, there was nothing to visit except for two buildings and a rustic coffee shop. As I was quite thirsty and tired, I decided to order an American Coffee, a beverage that Europeans famously criticize as being as bad as colored water compared to their condensed Café Express. To me, however, what I wanted was coffee and hot water. The lady at the coffee shop brought me a cup of coffee that was five or six times more significant than the small cups of Parisian coffee. I enjoyed the drink immensely, feeling the hot liquid invigorating my tired body. The Greyhound bus would be leaving in about fifteen minutes, so I sat calmly, admiring the blue sky and the delightful New Mexico weather in April. To my surprise, the lady returned and filled up my coffee cup once again. I enjoyed the second cup as much as the first, and when I paid, she charged me for just one cup, which was inexpensive. In my mind, I discovered that Americans were pleased to provide unlimited refills of coffee, but I did not know if this was the norm throughout the country. Nevertheless, I remained quite sure that I enjoyed American coffee from that day forward. Twenty-five years later, one day, I drove
from Los Angeles to Albuquerque, hoping to find the small coffee shop I had
visited so many years before to drink my first-ever American coffee.
Unfortunately, I could not locate the shop, but the sky was still blue, and
the memories of that day remained vivid in my mind and heart. Charles Phan Hoang (Bridgehead Coffee in Glebe February 04, 2012.)

June 01, 2024 Sentence 15 of Thu-Thuy TRAM LUAN PHA HET U MINH |
|
|
QUESTION (from Master Paola Binh-Lam) I would like to ask you for clarification on sentence 15 (Trầm
luân phá hết u minh ).
INPUT (from Master Tue-Viet) According to my
knowledge, Trầm luân phá hết u
minh Literally it can be
translated as: The hardships /
difficulties in life destroy all the darkness. The hardship in life can be present in different ways in life, either it can be psychologically (stress, insecurity, fear, sadness and many other things...) or physically (sickness, weakness, old age etc...) BUT in the way of Vietchidao, the practitioner should have the optimistic and positive thought and action on the hardship of life rather than focusing on the negative side that we can't control. This means that one can use the problems and difficulties of life (Trầm luân) as the good means to train oneself to be stronger, physically and psychologically, and to cultivate the energies that can destroy (phá hết) all the dark sides of one life (u minh) in order to prevent oneself from further sufferings. In conclusion, in the way of Vietchidao the difficulties can make oneself becoming stronger, healthier and more helpful. This is the deep meaning of this phrase 15, and maybe it is also called the Way of Vietchidao Integral Body and Mind Practice: Strength and Happiness. |
