REMIC RAPIDS PARK

Post 676  September 28, 2024

REMIC RAPIDS PARK

Many years ago, on a beautiful autumn day, I discovered Remic Rapids Park, located about 4 kilometers from Parliament Hill in Ottawa. Since then, I have revisited this unique place almost every year, always finding great joy in its tranquil atmosphere and unusual rock sculptures. The park is home to numerous balanced rock sculptures, which transform the shoreline of the Ottawa River into a stunning natural gallery.

Remic Rapids is particularly renowned for the work of John Ceprano, an artist who began creating these sculptures in the early 1980s. Ceprano uses only natural stones found along the riverbank, carefully balancing them into intricate, gravity-defying formations without the use of adhesives or supports. His work beautifully blends art and nature, evoking a sense of harmony, balance, and impermanence.

While sitting in quiet meditation at this serene place, I once reflected on how the balanced rock sculptures at Remic Rapids symbolize the interplay between human creativity and the natural world, representing a peaceful coexistence with nature.

ILLUSION AND REALITY

Post 675   September 21, 2024

ILLUSION AND REALITY

I arrived on a remote island and discovered its stunning beaches, where the pristine waters mirrored the blue sky, the trees, and drifting clouds, like a flawless reflection. A mirror shows things, but what it reflects is an illusion. As I look back on my long journey through life, I realize how difficult it is to distinguish reality from illusion. Too often, illusion is more alluring than reality. In business, politics, and even martial arts, people frequently make misguided decisions when they mistake illusion for truth, the process for the content. Politicians, in particular, are masters of this art—blurring the line between promises and achievements.

 Back to School Season 2024-2025
Message from the Grand Master

Dear Black Belts and Teachers,

As we enter this exciting Back to School season, I want to take a moment to reconnect with each of you. You are not only models for your students but also ambassadors of our art to the wider community. We are proud of all you have accomplished this past year, and we look forward to a new year filled with growth and achievement.

Our students rely on us for more than just physical training—they look to us for guidance in navigating life’s challenges. They seek to understand how to apply the principles of our art to their daily lives. As mentors, you carry the responsibility of upholding the core values that define our art: Honor, Discipline, Respect, Perseverance, and Humility.

Encourage your students to set ambitious goals and push themselves to new heights in their training. Help them embrace Collaborative Learning, a key practice in our tradition, while also fostering Continuous Learning, a vital principle for personal and collective growth.

To support you on this journey of development, remember that you are not alone. You can rely on various resources within the Viet-Chi System, including:

  • The Viet-Chi Institute (Master Edio)
  • Teachers School (Master Paola)
  • Leading Black Belts (Master Piotr)
  • The Research Center (Master Viet Ha)
  • Alumni Networks
  • Viet-Chi Post
  • VCI Publishing
  • Club Master Hoang
    ...and many more.

Let this new school year be an opportunity to reignite our passion for the art and recommit to excellence in everything we do.

Be Strong. Be Happy. Be Helpful.

Nothing is so dangerous to the progress of the human mind than to assume that our views of science are ultimate, that there are no mysteries in nature, that our triumphs are complete and that there are no new worlds to conquer.

THE CORMORANT

Post 674  September 14, 2024

The Cormorant

It was a serene summer day on Petrie Island, a conservation haven, when I first encountered the cormorant up close. His sleek black feathers gleamed under the sunlight, and with a quiet sense of respect, I called him Mister Cormorant. For the next week, like clockwork, I returned to the same spot each day. Without fail, Mister Cormorant was always there, perched on a half-submerged tree trunk, as if waiting for me.

I would sit silently on a nearby bench, content to observe him, while he seemed just as aware of me—though he never acknowledged my presence. He went about his business, pretending I wasn’t there. Cormorants are known for their remarkable fishing skills, diving deep underwater to catch fish with astonishing precision. They are patient hunters, waiting for just the right moment before plunging into the depths. Afterward, they often stand with wings outstretched to dry in the sun, a pose of quiet elegance.

Mister Cormorant embodied all these traits. But what captivated me most was how, when he stood still for long periods, he seemed more like a philosopher lost in thought, contemplating things beyond this world. His stillness had a depth, as if he were pondering the mysteries of existence. Then, in an instant, he would dive, disappearing beneath the surface, only to reappear far away—a sudden, graceful movement that always took my breath away.

Watching him in these moments was a gift, a small but profound offering from nature that I cherished. In time, Mister Cormorant became a silent companion. Though we never exchanged words, we shared an unspoken connection. Each day, I looked forward to seeing him.

But one day, when I arrived at our usual meeting place, Mister Cormorant was nowhere to be seen. I sat on the bench, waiting patiently for him, but the water remained undisturbed. The next day, and the days that followed, I returned with the same hope, yet he never came back.

I missed him deeply, my friend in the quiet moments, and without him, the island felt emptier. The water, once alive with his presence, seemed soulless.
