POST 733 … The insignificant-looking man tapped lightly on his shoulder, pointing to the overhead luggage compartment: "While you were sleeping, your bag fell to the ground. I picked it up and placed it there." Lam-Tieu took his bag and discreetly
put his hand inside it to check if his gold was still there. Reassured, he
thanked the man for his kindness and invited him to sit next to him. "I get off at the next station,
Thanh-Hoa. This is where I live. I am coming back from Hanoi, after visiting
my uncle who has been ill." said the insignificant-looking man, smiling
inwardly, very satisfied with his lies, “and you?" Lam-Tieu: "You're lucky. You will
soon arrive while I still have a long way to go. I am going to Saigon. It is
more than sixteen hundred kilometres from here and it needs at least thirty
more hours." Insignificant-looking man:
"Really! You have a long trip. Is this the first time you are going
there?" Lam-Tieu: "No, I was born in
Saigon." Insignificant-looking man: "Oh!
You do not have a southern accent." Lam-Tieu: "I was born there, but
I was orphaned at the age of five. Then after, I have been raised by my uncle
in Hanoi." Insignificant-looking man: "I was
there once to visit a cousin. I loved living in Saigon. It's a great city. I
regret that my stay was too short. Will you stay long?" Lam-Tieu: "I decided to return to
live there permanently." Insignificant-looking man: "Since
you have this option, you are right. It's a city full of activities and
opportunities. What will you do?" Lam-Tieu: "Probably I will open a
business." They continued to chat for a few more
minutes. Lam-Tieu was relaxed, more and more relieved to get away from his
torment. He felt confident. The insignificant-looking man looked
at his watch: "The train is approaching Thanh-Hoa. Here is my business
card. I have good friends in Saigon and if there is any need you can contact
me." Lam-Tieu took the card and slipped it
into his pocket without looking at it like many other Vietnamese would have
done. He had no card to offer back. A few minutes later, at 4:23 pm, the
train entered the station of Thanh-Hoa. The insignificant-looking man took
his small bag, said goodbye to Lam-Tieu and got off the train. He observed
the platform until the train departed and then sent a text message from his
cellphone. He left the station and got into a taxi, directing the driver to
go to the police station down town. The city of Thanh-Hoa, the capital of Thanh-Hoa province, is about hundred and fifty kilometres south of Hanoi. This province, located at the border between North and Central Vietnam, is an important place in the History of Vietnam. The village of Lam-Son, east of Thanh-Hoa, was the birthplace of the national hero Le-Loi, founder of the Le dynasty in the fifteenth century CE. (to be
