CRITICAL THINKING:
WHAT IS MOVING?
____________________
Critical
thinking is a way we analyze a situation or a statement under
logical reasoning and independent thinking. Critical thinking could help us
detect inconsistencies and common mistakes in reasoning or belief and
formulate our own conclusion. We can nurture this capacity by having the
habit of using critical thinking to analyze any situation in our daily life

WHAT IS MOVING?
In this Post 265 I’d like
to share with you the following story:
Three monks were standing at the gate of a temple.
One of them noticed that the banner flapped in front of the gate, then he
said:
-The banner moves
The second monk did not agree with this affirmation and he said:
-The wind moves
There upon the third monk intervened:
-The mind moves.
After discussions,
they found that they cannot get to a consensus, so they brought the issue
of what was moving before the Head-master of the temple who then answered:
-Of course, the mind moved.
Now could I have the pleasure
to receive your opinion /comments about this situation that affected the
three monks? Who was right? Is there some way to test the Head-master of
the temple?(Please send your email to :

(The Judge)
We have received from Edio -
Tue Chu the following input:
If you
take into account the fact that the judge tried a ruse to unmask the
culprit, just for the fact of having had this initiative, you would think
it was a good judge.
This situation, however, assumes as true
certain circumstances without which the work of the court may not be
correct.
1) It is assumed that all citizens have at
least one bale of cotton
2) If not, some would try to obtain it, and the
thief could have taken advantage of it to give away the stolen.
3) A not stupid thief would not have led to the
judge the cotton bag stolen.
So in my opinion, to be a good judge, he should
have done more research on how the person had obtained the cotton bag.
(Edio - Tue Chu)
(g.m) For my part, I would say the
Judge in this story was just a dishonest and abusing judge. He dishonestly
built a trap to lure normal citizens into; he made them laugh in order to
abuse his position for punishing them. How would you feel if you lived under the jurisdiction
of such a judge?

Here we have found on the Web an amusing story to share
with you. Please enjoy reading it; at the end we will submit a question to
your critical answer.
“A merchant bearing fifty rolls
of cotton on his shoulders stopped to rest from the heat of the day beneath
a shelter where a large stone Buddha was standing. There he fell asleep,
and when he awoke his goods had disappeared. He immediately reported the
matter to the police.
A judge opened court to
investigate. "That stone Buddha must have stolen the goods,"
concluded the judge. "He is supposed to care for the welfare of the
people, but he has failed to perform his holy duty. Arrest him."
The police arrested the stone
Buddha and carried it into the court. A noisy crowd followed the statue,
curious to learn what kind of a sentence the judge was about to impose.
When the judge appeared on the
bench he rebuked the boisterous audience. "What right have you people
to appear before the court laughing and joking in this manner? You are in
contempt of court and subject to a fine and imprisonment."
The people hastened to apologize.
"I shall have to impose a fine on you," said the judge, "but
I will remit it provided each one of you brings one roll of cotton goods to
the court within three days. Anyone failing to do this will be
arrested."
One of the rolls of cotton which
the people brought was quickly recognized by the merchant as his own, and
thus the thief was easily discovered. The merchant recovered his goods, and
the other cotton rolls were returned to the people.”
A very interesting story, isn’t it? Now we have a
question for you: What is your opinion about the judge in this story: Was
he really a good judge?
