A FOGGY CITY Post 689 December 28th, 2024 |

A FOGGY CITY In the autumn of 2011, I
found myself traveling across Europe, eager to explore new horizons. For my
birthday, I decided to celebrate in solitude, immersing myself in the charm
of a vibrant and historic city I had never visited before. With a small
backpack, no cellphone, and almost no plans, I embarked on an adventure
driven by spontaneity. At 5 p.m., I stepped out
of the train station into what I assumed was the city center. The surrounding
architecture suggested I was in the heart of Wroclaw, a city in southwestern
Poland. I marveled briefly at the beauty of the square. But my awe was
short-lived. Almost without warning, the sky darkened, and a dense fog
descended upon the city, transforming it into an eerie, otherworldly
landscape. In mere moments, the streets emptied. The silhouettes of passersby
vanished, swallowed by the thick, swirling mist. Disoriented and caught off
guard, I quickly ducked into a nearby café -fittingly named Coffee Heaven. The name proved
prophetic. Inside, the warmth of the café enveloped me like a comforting
embrace. The decor was tasteful and inviting, a stark contrast to the surreal
scene outside. I ordered a coffee and a slice of cake, and to my delight,
both far exceeded my expectations. The coffee was rich and aromatic, and the
cake, a delicate masterpiece. For a moment, I felt like I had truly found a
heaven amidst the chaos. But as the time passed,
the persistent fog outside began to weigh on me. The surreal atmosphere felt
eternal, and I realized with growing unease that I had no idea how I would
find my way to my hotel. My lack of preparation suddenly seemed reckless -I
didn’t speak the language, I had no map, and I couldn’t even confidently
pronounce the city’s name, Wroclaw. The word tumbled awkwardly in my mind, a
foreign syllabic puzzle. As the café neared closing time, I sat there,
grappling with a mix of wonder and apprehension. The fog outside refused to
lift, and I couldn’t help but feel as though the city itself had conspired to
trap me in this strange, dreamlike moment. It was a birthday I would never
forget -a celebration of solitude, mystery, and the unpredictable beauty of
the unknown. Charles Phan Hoang (for VCP Winter 2024) ( Post 689, December 28th, 2024)
