at the way they drew their swords and the defensive stances they took,
Chien-Tan, Bao Dan immediately knew that they were disciples from his own
training school. Keeping
his position behind the rock, he shouted "Thuan-Thien!" and both of
them replied "Bao-Quoc!" With
great agility, Bao-Dan jumped on the path, drew his sword and executed a few
techniques from his school, then made a bow. Both were now sure that Bao-Dan
was one of their fellows. Relieved from the tension, they introduced each
other. After some talks, ‘leopard’, talented for observation, noticed that
the brown cloth tied to Bao-Dan's belt had some fresh blood on it. He said: "Brother,
with all my respect, I imagine you had a fight recently." "Yes,
at the beginning of this path, I just killed a bandit named Quy-Su." "The
blood traces are very sparse. Your slashing sword must have been as fast as a
lightening." "Thank
you for the compliment, but speed was not the only factor. In that situation,
I used the technique 'chuyen-kiem-trai' from our school. It was very
effective." Nowadays,
that technique is known in the Vietnamese Art of the Sword under the name
chem-quy which means ‘to cut the demon's head’. After
leaving his two fellows, Bao-Dan chose to take the short cut which passed
above the Red River. His progression was more difficult, but what a reward it
was when the splendid view of the Red River, roaring and swirling between the
rocks, met his eyes! He decided to take a rest in this beautiful place for a
while. The wild beauty of the nourishing river of his native land
strengthened his love for his country. Sitting on a rock, deep in thought,
suddenly he heard some crackles and rustles of leaves. Immediately, he was on
his guard. Between the foliage of the bushes, he saw a majestic tiger coming
towards him. It did not seem to be aggressive. At some distance, the tiger
stopped and looked at him. Bao-Dan also was watching this magnificent animal
and he noticed that it had a mark on one of its ears similar to the one of
the tiger cub he had rescued and fed a few years back, when he was in a
training class of his Alma Mater. Bao-Dan started talking to the tiger and
the tone of his voice made the tiger lie down. It was really Ty-Ho. Bao-Dan
continued talking and the tiger happily rolled in the grass for a moment,
then went back into the dense forest. After
this unexpected reunion, Bao-Dan returned to his mission and resumed his
journey. The sun was setting and the path was becoming dark. He quickened his
pace in order to reach the small temple dedicated to the national hero, Tran
Hung Dao, before the night. This temple was really just a shelter for the
statue - it did not have a door, but was used as a refuge by passing
travellers. When he reached the temple, his bird, perched on his shoulder, sang
happily - Bao-Dan knew that there was no imminent danger. He picked up a few
pieces of deadwood to set a fire and settled for the night. Close to the fire
he felt safe. At the end of this long day of walk and fight, he was tired.
The warmth of the fire helped him to fall asleep quickly. Suddenly, in his
sleep, he heard the alert of his bird. He opened his eyes and saw a beautiful
young lady sitting close to the fire. Further, behind her, he could make out
a figure of a tall man. The man came closer to the fire and by the glow of
embers Bao-Dan could see his face. His likeness with Quy-Su startled him. His
face grimacing with anger and a dark look, the man drew his long sword and
came to attack Bao Dan. In a single leap Bao-Dan was in a posture of defence
and drew his sword while shouting his terrifying scream. The sound of his own
voice woke him up. It was only a nightmare! Immediately,
he put his hand on his large and long cloth belt that he wore around his
waist. Anxiously, he touched it. To his great relief, the Sacred Seal was
still there. The sun started to rise, it was time to continue his journey to
hand the Seal personally to the Great Chancellor of the Thuan-Thien Secret
Society, and so successfully accomplish his mission. He walked briskly for
two hours without meeting anybody. Suddenly, the bird Chim-Linh gave him an
alert. An armed gang was coming. (to be continued) |
