537 29Jan2022 ETRETAT Artists of all stripes have documented the beauty of this corner of northwestern France. The seaside village of Étretat was home to renowned writer Guy de Maupassant, who compared the cliff and keyhole arch we see in our image to an elephant's trunk drinking from the sea. This landscape has also been painted by Gustave Courbet and Claude Monet, among many others. The area of chalk cliffs that dominate this part of Normandy are known as the Côte d'Albâtre (Alabaster Coast). They are part of the same formation and strongly resemble the White Cliffs of Dover, their geological siblings across the English Channel (source: Internet)
