We must trust to nothing but facts: These are presented to us by Nature, and cannot deceive. We ought, in every instance, to submit our reasoning to the test of experiment, and never to search for truth but by the natural road of experiment and observation.

Antoine Lavoisier

(unfortunately, he was beheaded in the French Revolution, a loss of a great scientist.)

THE USE OF MARTIAL ART

Charles Phan Hoang, December 22, 2013,

Old society created martial art and used it to fight and kill. Modern society must refine it and use it for other aims.

The best way to refine a martial art is going back to its origin and extract what was its best value not in term of fighting art but in term of hidden value behind the martial art of that society. The hidden value of Japanese martial art seems to be the rigorous spirit of Japanese people. The true nature of Chinese martial art could be discovered through some common factors of this large and diverse population: care about your own ancestors, care about details, following the path rather than changing the path. Vietnamese martial art is rather a historical record of this indomitable people in permanent struggle to survive through some thousands of unrest years. This martial art record will show us its values through the real nature of Vietnamese people: Rigorous in defense action but not so rigorous in training organization; full of strategies for the weak fighting against the giant; changing the appearance and not changing the deep soul. Then through Korean martial art we could find, in term of intrinsic values, significant similarities and great differences between this strong people and their neighbors.

If you want to understand the soul of French people, one way is examining the practice of La Boxe Française/ French Boxing, and another way could be reviewing documents on Duel in the history of France. This could help better understand how this undisciplined great people did elegantly settle a point of honor through a deadly contest with swords. Of course, alternatively you can also enjoy reading Les Trois Mousquetaires.
