A CENTURY AGO: A WORLD WAR BEGINS IN EUROPE July 28, 1914
I n 1913 , until
Spring of 1914, the World was peaceful and life very nice in Europe.
Raymond
Poincaré took office as president of France.
In China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen was
president of the Republic of China which he founded in 1912 after the
overthrow of the Qing dynasty.
Rabindranath
Tagore won Nobel Prize in Literature; Henri La Fontaine in Peace; Charles
Robert Richet in Medecine, Alfred Werner in Chemistry; Heike Kamerlingh Onnes
in Physics.
In
America luxury motorcars priced from $2,500 to $7,500 with Packard, Pierce Arrow,
Peerless, and Cadillac was the leading make in the range of $1,500 to $2,500.
Henry Ford offered workers a minimum wage of $5 per day. Charlie Chaplin, 24,
signed a contract for $150 per week in New York with the movie maker Mack
Sennett.
In New York, the 60-story Woolworth, the world’s tallest
habitable building at that time, opens its doors for business in April 1913.
July
28th, 1914 First World War begins.
Germany
declares war on Russia August 1 and on France August 3, then the war quickly
widens. Japan declares war on Germany August 23. From August 14 to August 25
the Battle of the Frontiers costs 250,000 lives.
In
the end of this War, the percentage of men who died is 57% of 65 million of
men mobilized to fight, and the number of Civilian casualties is close to 9
million. The total War Cost altogether is over 186 billion dollars.
Knowing
this, what conclusion would we draw when we see all these tensions surrounding
the World today?
Possibly,
a way to help these belligerent guys to make peace is to let them know
that their salaries will be cut off 50% when they go to war :-)

LOUIS PASTEUR and JOSEPH MEISTER
|
|
The Second World
War started in 1939. Rapidly the Nazi invaded France and arrived in Paris. The
story goes that, in June1940, they ordered Joseph Meister to open Pasteur’s
tomb in order to examine it.
Louis Pasteur
(1822-1895) is considered the most important scientist in medical research for
the nineteenth century with his process of ‘pasteurisation’ and his
development of a vaccine against rabies. In 1885 using his rabies vaccine he
successfully saved the life of a title boy called Joseph Meister. When Pasteur
died in 1895 he was buried inside the Pasteur Institute, in Paris. And almost
a half-century later Joseph Meister happened to became a caretaker at the
Pasteur Institute.
According to a
legend well known in France, when the Nazi came to Pasteur Institute, Joseph Meister refused to comply with the violation
by killing himself. Whether this is the truth or just a legend, the suicide
of Joseph Meister happened in June 1940 is certain. Anyway he is the first
man who got the rabies vaccine from Louis Pasteur./.

About
Enemies
|
|
I’d
like to share with you some quotes regarding how to deal with enemies:
-Frank
Sinatra: Alcohol may be man’s worst enemy, but the bible says love your enemy.
-Mahatma
Gandhi: Whenever you are confronted with an opponent, conquer him with love.
-J.F.
Kennedy: Forgive your enemies, but never forget their names.
-Napoleon:
Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.
-Oscar
Wilde: Always forgive your enemies; nothing annoys them so much.
-Franklin
D. Roosevelt: I ask you to judge me by the enemies I have made.
-Paul
Newman: A man with no enemies is a man with no character.
Now,
I noticed that thanks to their enemies the above mentioned men made us
quoting them. It is not so bad having some enemies in life, and it is not
really good having everyone as a friend. The hard question is how to know
when an enemy could become a friend and a friend an enemy.

I
wish you a Happy Easter and a Great Spring Season filled with JOY and
SUCCESS.
In
Spring what do we do in Canada? Of course we go out and enjoy the nice
weather, many spring activities, fabulous restaurants of all styles from
Tibetan, Korean, Mongolian, Thai to Ukrainian, French, Italian, Lebanese, Moroccan,
and… American.
But
how about Winter when it was minus 25C outside?
Of
course, we continue to go out as usual thinking that Spring is coming and we also
enjoy many Canadian things such as playing Hockey or watching it on TV! We
can also visit some Canadian National Museums because our museums (and
national arts galleries) are not just museums; they are large beautiful buildings
that could serve us as huge winter shelters! There are restaurants and coffee
shop to help you spend a whole day visiting without any problem; you don’t
need money. You just need to have your credit card, however.
In
this post I share with you some pictures taken at the Aviation Museum in
Ottawa about mid-February this year, 2014. Sorry for the low quality of my
antique cellphone camera.

HAEIN SA in South Korea
My trip back to this sacred place, after 31 years, has been more than wonderful, it is simply full of meaning and emotion. Yes, it is at Haeinsa temple in 1983 I created the form BAT-NHA quyen (kata) that many of you practice today. I will tell you in details when we meet at the next Annual Spring Training Stage 2015.
For now, please see pictures taken yesterday at Haeinsa
I am writing this quick note from the road in South Korea to let all of you ( in Learning Group and Registered Black Belts, and Circle members) know that it is not easy for me to write long text on the road. However Master Edio Tue-Chu frequently receives my traveling note through cell-phone which is limited to 160 signs and he forwards personally to each of you.
